My husband and I used to come here every once in a while with our kids but we stopped going because one of the waitresses ruined the experienced for us. We have two kids. Our oldest is four and youngest a year old. Our oldest behaves pretty well at restaurants but our youngest is still a baby, so obviously he’s not going to be silent the whole time while eating. Before you say, “oh you shouldn’t go out to restaurants with your kids if you can’t keep them contained” I agree with you to some extent. However, you can never predict how a 1 year old is going to respond to his or her situation. My son was hungry so he was fussy, and I was keeping him contained mostly. Except for the initial screams he let out I was able to calm him down enough to at least eat some of our food. Some other customers commented on my parenting saying “I would’ve been slapped if I had screamed like that. Parents these days.” I did not care able these particular comments because I’m used to people not understanding what it’ll like having kids in a college town.
However the reason I’m giving one star is because of the waitress that we had. She seemed middle aged and was nice for the most part. That was until she outwardly insulted my family to one of her other tables. She was refilling the drinks at some tables behind us, and commented “are you enjoying your meal? I bet it would be better if there weren’t screaming kids right next to you, huh?”
I don’t care how you feel about a customer. Talk bad about them to your coworkers where the customers can’t hear you. Because that was incredibly rude and unprofessional for her to say. Right where she knew we could hear her. We still left her a tip, because we respect the profession of being a waitress, but we will not be...
Read moreBeen there before, had an amazing time. This last time, could not have been worse. Before arriving we called for availability and was told that there was not a wait time for our group. We arrived and the table they said they had for us was not available and didn't end up being free until after we ordered while being split up and served separately. Spent over 45 minutes for our group of 3 to receive our food, yet didn't receive silverware for several more minutes. Even though the wait for food was long, the food was cold on arrival and didn't live up to their description we received when we were ordering. We finished eating and sat for several more minutes until I had to go ask for the check. Turned out that they applied a service charge for our group of 3, even though we were taken care of separately from the other group we arrived with. The server's reasoning was that we came in as a group so we would all get a service charge. This didn't make any sense as the other group we came with had eaten and was leaving as we were getting our food. I talked to her about it, but her response was "it's just how it works". The previous perception of the Varsity diner was awesome, but now I will not be back. Don't go if you value your time or customer service. Management needs an overhaul to get it...
Read moreI took my 2 y/o son here for lunch on June 9. I had tempered expectations and was pleased. When we came in, we had to wait 5 minutes to a be seated because the diner was packed. When greeted I was informed that the wait for food would be about 30 minutes because they were so busy (this proved accurate). I ordered a bacon burger with an extra side of fries. It was not the absolute best burger I have ever had but a pretty good burger comparatively in Moscow. It was cooked well with a little pink in the middle and the bacon was thick and nicely cooked. The crinkle-cut fries were not special but pretty good. It's not really priced like a lunch place. The price scale is more similar to a Red Robin and the food quantities are solid. I will definitely go back. The environment is awesome. Feels like a real 50s diner.
Update: A lot has changed here. The food is better in almost every way. The Burgers are excellent. Fries are completely different and much, much better. Some of my favorites in town now. They also offer breakfast now. It is served all day. If you like hearty breakfast, you will like the...
