Really great portions for the price. I got the sampler platter which includes half a pulled pork sandwich, a quarter rack of ribs, a pulled chicken wrap, a small pile of pulled brisket, their 5 bean & meat baked beans, and coleslaw. The pulled pork sandwich was fantastic, the chicken wrap was great - I thought it was a bit salty though. The ribs are where is got interesting. The meat itself was perfect, they were tender and fell right off the bone. But the flavor was not that good. The smoke flavor had a strong chemical taste to it, as if it had been smoked over wood that had been soaked in lighter fluid. It honestly tasted like lawnmower exhaust. The pulled brisket had the same intense, off-putting flavor as well. My family tried it and thought the same thing. They ordered the pulled brisket and pulled pork quesadillas. They liked them. The presentation and service was great, and the atmosphere was pleasant though.
Update: Thank you for responding. The reason why I noticed the ribs and the brisket as having the bad flavor is because in sampler, they are by themselves. The pork and the chicken were buried in a wrap or a sandwich and were also the first things I ate so I didn't notice it at first. But I also saw a review on here by someone who got the platter 2 months ago and said almost the same thing. They described it as a gasoline like taste. But if you truly don't use any artificial components/ignitors in your smoking process than you simply are oversmoking or improperly smoking your meats. Perhaps the smoker is not being vented properly. Instead of fresh smoke flowing through the meats, its getting trapped for longer than it should, making excess Carbon molecules build up in the meat creating the afformentioned chemical taste. Either way, I've had a lot barbecue, many in the south, and have never tasted a bad flavor like that before. Even locally, Route 88 BBQ at Oglebay smokes their meats right out back and they taste perfectly smoked, no bad flavor. If you focused on refining the smoking process just a little more, even if it's as simple as smoking it for less time (I would recommend around 30% less) you would probably be the best barbecue...
Read moreWe first became aware of Mason Dixon BBQ when we heard the ad for the 1/2 price gift certificates. I set a reminder notice on my phone and purchased certificates the moment they went on sale. We were, in addition, happy to try some local bbq (I am a former Texas resident) and also happy to support a Veteran-Owned business. Our first visit was a very cold evening and we were told there was no heat. No big deal; we are bikers and have ridden in 19 degree weather. Next we were told, "No beer." When I asked why, the young lady said, "We want to keep a family atmosphere." I, in turn, said. "So basically, you can't trust folks around here to have a beer or two and not act up?" To which the young lady replied, "Something like that." We placed our order; I don't remember what my wife had, but I had the platter. They informed me they were out of some meat, so they would give me extra of something else. Once again, no big deal. Then they said they didn't have any potato salad. Okay, bbq with no beer and no potato salad. We still decided to stay and try the food. As stated in other reviews the food was not bad, however, some of our hot food was on the cold side and some of the meat was rather dry. More than 50% of the food was warm and flavorful. Now comes yesterday. We arrived full of renewed hope in having a good meal (even though we knew there would be no beer). We began placing our order (I was getting the platter again) when my wife noticed a sign saying "cornbread". She poked me excitedly and said, "Look, they have cornbread!" Then the young lady said flatly, "We're out of cornbread." I do believe it was on a dry-erase board (if you get my drift). My wife continued our order as I walked away to get our drinks. I heard my wife say, "My husband will have a side of potato salad." Then, those magic words again, spoken flatly, "We are out of potato salad." My wife then yelled to me, "You wanna just go?" I replied. "Yes." We went down the street and ate, had a beer (without causing a ruckus anywhere) and gave our 1/2 price gift certificate to a stranger who seemed very happy to get it. "Bon...
Read moreWe were looking forward to come and taste this BBQ. Needless to say we were very disappointed. Do not like ordering at the door, we have never been here before and were not sure what to order. We ordered the sampler and a side of sweet potatoe fries (they were really good). The coleslaw had no taste, 5 beans were fantastic, the chicken wrap was dry, the half very small pulled pork sandwich was good. The 3 ribs were horrible so dry and tasted like gasoline, and the shredded meat we could not tell what is was so dry we could not figure it out and it also tasted like gasoline. The menu on line says the meat was brisket. So glad we did not order a rack of ribs to take home for later. I normally would have said something but we just put in the trash and came home. Also don't see how it is a beer, wine and BBQ. No beer or wine! And not very clean. My lips still have the tingle of gasoline on them. So glad I did not bring our friends with us. We where here today February 23, 2019 at about 2pm.
Thank you for responding, there was no paper menu offered to us we had to look at the chalk board. The girl at the register never offered that. I agree with the others about poor service. Lack of personality! We were wondering what he Oak Ridge Boy platter was, but you cant tell cause like I said no menu! One of the reviews said great Beer Wine & BBQ. Maybe the health inspector did not check the tables! There was Kielbasa in the 5 Beans! We didn't have any in our beans! Trust me I know good BBQ and this is not it. DRY MEAT! Maybe its...
