I have Celiac Disease and Five Guys is one of the few places I will risk eating at since the only gluten in their stores is the buns and a few of the milkshake mix-ins. All of the Five Guys I've been to so far, I let them know I can't have gluten and they take many steps to prevent cross contamination in my food. I get my burger on a lettuce wrap, they store the lettuce for lettuce wraps separately, they change gloves before touching anything I will eat, they bag my food separate from my partner's, etc. Since it's an open restaurant, you can watch all of the food prep and even though eating out at all poses risks for me, I've had good experiences at the stores I've eaten at so far.
Not this location. I told the young man at the counter I would like my burger on a lettuce wrap, about my gluten "allergy" and asked if they'd be willing to change gloves to make my food. He seemed to understand my request, we paid for the food and we stepped back to watch. He told the cooks how many burgers to put on but didn't say a word about an allergy, changing gloves, or anything about a special order to the cooks. The two used the same gloves the entire time to handle buns and my lettuce wrap. They used their gloved hands to scoop onions onto the burger grill, which would contaminate onions for anyone who doesn't want gluten and contaminate all the burgers put on that same grill. I've never seen that done at another restaurant. They grilled their mushrooms on the same surface as their buns, which I've also never seen done at any of the Five Guys I've been to. I did not eat the food I was given at this location and I will not be back.
It's one thing for them to stick contaminated gloved hands straight into the onion bin, or cook vegetables on the same surface as the buns. For 99% of people that doesn't matter in the slightest and even as a Celiac I wouldn't have thrown a fit over it. I'd just not eat the food and avoid the location in the future. The one star review is from my frustration with the cashier. I was clear that I couldn't have gluten and wanted the cooks to change gloves, the restaurant was quiet so he definitely heard me and he acted like he understood everything I was saying. Then he literally didn't say a word to the cooks. All they had was a "no bun" order on the receipt. That's kind of ignorant to listen to the customer then not pass the word on at all. He told them how many burgers to put on then walked off and started drinking a milkshake out in the lobby....
Read moreThis Five Guys in Mount Airy, MD, has got to be the worst Five Guys there is for french fries as stores known for their fries go. Every time I go into this store I order french fries, extra crispy, because I dislike limp, soggy fries. This store consistently under cooks it's french fries even after being ordered extra crispy. If a place known for their french fries can't cook fries, what makes them think anything else is worth buying. Too bad, I like Five Guys food. Probably will not visit them again.
This is an update to the last post. Went to this 5 Guys last night. I got a burger and fries. Well the burger was good but as usual the fries were terrible. How can a restaurant known for their fries consistently produce a poor quality product. This is a case where quantity does not outweigh quality. Fries were still limp and undercooked. They had a cooked appearance but were not. Many were pale to white in color. I knew as soon as I saw them that they would be undercooked. But hey, the...
Read moreI tried ordering from Five Guys online for the first time. It made it so easy. I didn't even know I could order online, but I check the website for the menu and pricing before going in. I had just gotten there after a very long day at work and was very tired. I just ordered from my car and waited a minute or two before walking in. They already knew about my order and asked who I was. I only waited a couple of minutes before it was ready. It was much faster than waiting in line in the store. When it said on the website about skipping the line, they weren't kidding! The food was great as usual. The fries are made when you arrive after ordering online so they're hot and fresh. I appreciate that! Not many people want cold, saggy fries. Great experience and great food!...
