I'm writing about my experience with this bakery at the North Charleston Wedding Expo. My partner & I (same-sex) attended the Wedding Expo not sure how welcome we would be, but just about every vendor we met with were really kind and helpful...just about all of them except...Bakies at I'On...
I tried a sample of the lemon curd cake and browsed through the menu. I didn't see the one I wanted (lemon-lavender) so I asked the person offering the samples if they could make it. She said she didn't know, but to ask the chef who was helping a young woman. The chef was very polite and inquisitive to the young woman, asking her which venue she was having the wedding, the date, etc. When she was done, she looked passed us even though we were standing nearly directly in front of her, as if we didn't exist. Finally I said "are you the chef?" to which she replied a deadpan and dismissive "yes," end of discussion, she seemed done with us. No small talk, no asking when the date was, which venue we chose, etc. I asked for a sample of the Raspberry Chambourde, which she gave me and I asked if she could make a lemon-lavender cake, again deadpan and dismissive "yes"...no follow up, no "take my card and let me know what you're thinking," etc...
I honestly am not sure why she treated us so different, dismissive, and uninterested in our business. It may be that she wasn't interested in serving the LGBTQ+ community, but to be honest, I can't say for sure if that was the reason. What I do know for sure is that I didn't like being treated as less than other potential clients and that's why Bakies at I'On will not get...
Read moreBought a birthday cake from here. Certainly wasn’t what I expected. Asked for bright colors like purples and red, something bright. They suggested flowers, I said perfect. What was put on the cake, I wouldn’t call it flowers. Getting passed the colors and the decorations of the cake, was expecting it to taste good at least. I can honestly say, this was the worst tasting cake I’ve ever had. I can not even put it into words. Wasn’t a white cake flavor, wasn’t a yellow cake flavor, I don’t know what it was. Kind of like cardboard, literally was. The texture I can say what it was suppose to be, a cross between a sheet cake and a pound cake is my closest guessed. Well needless to say, I wasted $40 on a small cake that looked horrible and tasted worse. I wanted it to be special for my mom’s 91 birthday. Gave the cake away. Stopped at the grocery store to piece up another cake because I promised the neighbor’s little boys left over cake. And there is no way I could give this cake to them. I doubt the staff at the restaurant liked this horrible cake either. Because that’s where I left it. You would be better off buy a box cake and making it yourself. Such a disappointment to what should have been the perfect ending to a wonderful 91st...
Read moreBakies had come highly recommended by multiple people. Based upon this positivity, I placed an order for my son’s cake a week prior to the date needed. The day of pick up, I receive a phone call 45 minutes prior to scheduled pickup time asking if I could come later. My schedule did not leave any wiggle room for this accommodation. I made a few phone calls, rearranged my schedule and children’s pickup times from school in order to ensure a cake for my sons special day and to ensure it would be completed to everyone’s expectations. It is highly disappointing to be asked to come later due to the baker who would be decorating the cake (Gayle) not being there on time or able to be reached. I understand appointments and life happen. I am a small business owner as well. My philosophy is the client always comes first. This was not an emergency situation. This was poor planning on this person’s part. I rearranged my schedule. A simple apology for my accommodation to her schedule would have gone a long way, possibly even something a little extra for my understanding and inconvenience. This was a terrible first impression, not to mention a B rating by DHEC on the front door. Let’s hope the cake is better than the customer service and...
