I want to give this place a good review. The staff is friendly. The food is fantastic. The location is perfect. And if you want to chill on your laptop for a few hours, the floor setup ain't too shabby. However, two things are preventing giving a good score. First, the music is blasting far too loud. Who the heck needs to have music blasting 24/7? Secondly, when you walk in, you evaluate if this is a spot that's conducive to working on your laptop. This morning, I popped in a took a look around, and found a nice table perfectly situated for working on the laptop: plenty of space, not situated in the middle of a high-traffic area and with an electrical outlet located right there. The only problem was, after working for a bit on my laptop, the BATTERY EMPTY WARNING appeared. I checked and ensured the cord was plugged in, but still no power. I plugged into some other outlets - still no power. As it turns out, the only active outlets are located near a bench. All of the outlets along the entire wall are inactive, which means prospective laptop-users get fooled into thinking they can park for a while and surf, only to find out at the last second that their laptop is about to power down. I asked the barista, and see said, "oh yeah, we've told the manager several times, but he hasn't done anything". The barista said that a lot of customers have likewise been fooled. And if the bench seats are full, you run the risk of your work getting interrupted, which could be a big deal if you're working remotely, for instance. As a short term solution, why hasn't the manager placed warning signs covering each outlet, clearly indicating NO POWER? As a long term solution (i.e. within one week), why hasn't the manager gotten the outlets fixed? It's a bad look for this otherwise cozy spot, and it's so unecessary. Furthermore, the manager is responsible for setting an example for his employees to follow. Sadly, he is setting an example of laziness, neglect and...
Read moreAfter hearing great things about Second State Coffee, I was so excited to check it out! The outside chairs were filled and the place looked hopping. I walked in and I stand loved the aesthetic. Lots of live plants and cute merchandising. There wasn’t any wait, which was great. However, stepping up to place my order I was instantly put off by the zombie-esque attitude behind the register. I was going to ask for recommendations, but after being asked in a monotone voice what I wanted, I decided to stick to my usual lavender latte. I brushed off the encounter and sat down with my daughter to wait for my drink. I had barely taken a seat when my drink was ready - quick service! But the gal handing me my drink was no friendlier. Called my name out in a monotone voice and when I wished her a good day, didn’t even really acknowledge I spoke. Thankfully, I was called to go pick someone up and had a reason to leave, because I had no desire to stay. Even the person cleaning up around the tables seemed miserable to be there.
Coffee was great but the atmosphere and energy left a lot to be desired. I brought it up to a friend who confirmed, “yeah, it’s pretty much always like that in there.” Well, if that’s the case, I’ll give my money to a business who likes to talk to their customers. But at least they got the...
Read moreHate that chain coffee places mean that real espresso places have to explain true macchiato's, but love to tell staff, that yes, I do want their macchiato and that I drove out of my way to get it. If you're looking for quality pulls, Second State delivers. Love the Mt Pleasant location because now I don't have to drive into Charleston when visiting family. Staff here and downtown are great - friendly, kind - makes me want to visit every time I'm in town. Nice job SS! *I will mention that in this location, capacity was at about 50% of tables, and those at tables were not wearing masks. I don't recommend planning to eat in right now, but they have a couple tables outside. Order to go until COVID rates go down. SC is not great at masking, so watch yourselves, and I do worry about staff having to work inside. *Second edit: so today wasn't a great visit. Maybe bc it was a Saturday morning and they were tired of making flavored coffees but macchiato just wasn't good. No attention to detail on the pull like the downtown location delivers. Pull was scalding hot. Milk was just poured in like they were serving up water. I was...
