Well, my husband and I came in for dinner, as it's our first anniversary, and we'd been driving all day, and we didn't want to celebrate in our hotel with takeout, nor did we want to go to a crowded outdoor dining area. The environment of the restaurant is nice, very spacious, but the service we received was subpar. The young man at the register couldn't hear us, kept fidgeting with his hands, drumming against the counter, and spoke over my husband while he attempted to clarify our order, because the young man could not hear us. My husband had pulled his mask down slightly so perhaps the boy could hear, because there is literally a large plexiglass window separating customers and staff behind the counter, and the young man told him to put his mask back up. Well, he only pulled it down because the kid was fidgeting and drumming his hands and not able to hear us speaking, and had to ask us to repeat ourselves numerous times, despite us speaking at a reasonable volume. We went ahead and seated ourselves, and our food was eventually brought out separately, with the wrong name on it because lo and behold, the young man still didn't hear us correctly, and after we both had our meals, we waited a few minutes and my husband had to return to the counter, as nobody could hear him as he said "Excuse me" to a server, and he had to go to the counter again to ask for our drinks. Customarily, drinks are served before food, so we were a little annoyed with having to ask for them 5 minutes after our food was brought to us, after our food was brought out separately, and was mislabeled. I will say, it was nice to see the ten commandments on our cups, because we believe that businesses who take a stand for the Lord, are doing a great thing. However I feel the management of this place should take more time and care with training employees on how to pay attention to customers while they are ordering, because the drumming and fidgeting came off as rude and impatient, and also impaired his focus on taking our order. I understand it was late, and we may be inconvenient by wanting to dine in at all, but I am 5 months pregnant and had spent the entire day in the car, and didn't want to eat sitting on a bed, or outside, and we WERE compliant with social distancing and mask rules. I gave 2 stars, because my husband's ribs were very delicious, but the corn bread on his plate was jiffy muffin mix, the onion rings were over battered like funnel cake dipped onions, and my burger was 50% shredded lettuce. I would assume this place, when running at peak without the covid hysteria is actually a decent place to eat, and we chose it because it was nearby to our hotel, but we were not personally thrilled with our experience and had we been more familiar with the area, would have certainly found some place better to enjoy our...
Read moreWe were in town for a medical visit and decided to try something new during our overnight stay in Charleston/Mt. Pleasant. After checking reviews, we landed on Melvin’s, hoping for top-tier brisket and mac & cheese.
Upon entering, it was obvious we were first-time visitors confused and scanning the large menu but no one acknowledged us or offered help. It felt like we were left to figure things out on our own, which set a poor tone.
My husband ordered the brisket grilled cheese with a side of mac & cheese. I went with the patty melt and onion rings, with plans to sample each other’s meals.
The food, unfortunately, didn’t measure up. My husband said the mac & cheese was dry and flavorless. The brisket sandwich needed more cheese and was just average, definitely not memorable. As for my patty melt, the burger itself seemed well-seasoned, but the sandwich overall just wasn’t giving “patty melt.” The bread was dry, and I even tried to salvage it with BBQ sauce, wasn’t a good save. The onion rings were massive with a good crunch and tasty batter.
The real standout? The Southern Sweet Tea. That was the only thing we’d come back for.
We paid $38 for two meals, which felt unreasonably high for what turned out to be a letdown. Sadly, we won’t...
