Played Derailed. We are avid players and like very challenging games. This is the first time we have played any of the game rooms in Charleston. A few special components, but done less than ideal aspects as well.
Pros: completely immersive - you are on a train. The related light, sound, and movement are incorporated. This game requires teamwork and communication more than most other escape rooms. Your game starts with your group divided. unique set up for game play. unique puzzles and several puzzles were very creative that we hadn't seen before. There’s a 2-Stephen’s, disarm the bomb and stop the train. Very creative. This was an excellent combo of novel components and if the “cons” were fixed this would be a 5 star game for sure.
Another plus, our guide was very personable.
Cons: the game wasn't at l00% and has room for overall improvement. Without giving things away…1 puzzle was finicky (game master had to come work on it mid-game); at least 2-3 puzzles that sequenced together were not included in our game bc a lever had been previously broken. Consequently that sequence of puzzles was out of commission and not included. (Bummer to not have the extra puzzles, they sounded cool.) Imo, beyond the finicky puzzle and the out of commission sequence, 2 additional puzzles could have been improved. This combination of less than ideal game play is the main reason for a 3 rating.
We asked for 2 clues at 2 different times; both times we were provided direct answers to solve the particular "puzzle" vs hints to guide our puzzle solving direction. Some folks prefer this. We would rather have a hint or suggestion vs an answer. Suggestion: players seek clarification on how clues work if it matters to you. This did not impact our rating. We should have sought clarification in regard to clue giving prior to playing.
Due to the setting: Light level is low light (recommend offering flashlights) we used lights on our phones. Also, the external "train" noise level was loud. Too loud for my taste and it made hearing others more difficult, but adds to the chaos and immersive nature of the game. Again, did not impact rating. Just an fyi for players. And definitely did add to the ambience.
We finished and stopped tgectrainin 45 minutes with 2 clues, BUT blew up 1/2 the train when disarming the bomb (which was too easy to...
Read moreMy husband and I had been to two other escape rooms before doing this one and we agree that Elite Escape has been our favorite so far! The lengths that they go to provide realism makes the game so much more fun. We also appreciated how much thought has been put into each detail. We participated in the Zombie Outbreak game and the use of the videos outside the "windows" and the extra effects made us feel like we were actually there. Though some members of our party were afraid going in that this would be a scary situation, they are true to their word that it is not a haunted house- though it was creepy at times!
I personally felt that the game was administered expertly. Our host gave a very quick but incredibly helpful introduction to the room. When we did ask for hints via the walkie-talkie, he answered promptly and didn't give any more information than we needed in that moment. He was friendly and excited for the experience to be a great one for everyone.
The puzzles themselves were very fun and interactive. There was a good mix of puzzle types and in our party of six, everyone had a chance to do something most of the time. There were the occasional times where we couldn't all be doing something, but those periods of time never lasted long.
Overall, the experience was absolutely amazing! Our host was amazing, the game was fun and tricky at times (but never impossible) and the room was set up very...
Read moreThe game itself was great (Area 51) and challenging for two people. But truthfully what will keep us coming back is the staff. We walk in to the most warm, quickly and truly memorable greeting from an amazing young man named Kenya. He had us rolling laughing from the second we walked in to the second we walked out. He even had his own incredibly creative and original story behind why we needed to escape the room. It was better than the storyline I read online! Next, a lovely young lady, Allison, helped us out with the clues. We’ve done other escape rooms where the clues were more confusing than the game itself, but she was clear, really helpful and genuinely a friendly person. Were it not for Kenya and Allison, this would’ve been just another escape room to tick off on our list. They both made the experience above and beyond expectation and, again, are the reason we’ll definitely be back to try the other rooms. Thanks for making our night and my birthday special guys!! -Christine &...
