Malheureusement, I did not enjoy my savory crepe here. All of the baked goods looked great, it was a very cute locaton and the staff was friendly. They also have nice outdoor seating.
The crepes look right, but anyone who has had a good Brittany style crepe would be disappointed. I will say that it was better than a place I went to in Montreal that specializes in this style of crepe, the flavor of the batter is better here, they just didn't execute well enough in my opinion. San Francisco had an amazing place called Ti Couz which spoiled me, not to mention a trip to Brittany and having my first crepe at a place that my host ate at for years. I'm sure he knew the best place in the area after vacationing there for so long. Needless to say, my crepe standard is HIGH.
The crepe on my complète was thick and tough, it wasn't thin and crisp, but it was hard and crunchy in a couple of very over cooked spots. The egg was over cooked too so I didn't even get the runny yolk to add some moisture and creaminess to the crepe (see the pic, there should be a well of yellow oozing goodness but it is quite solid). The bechemel crepe was a little better because it had some sauce and perhaps the crepe was less over done. The salad on the plate was very nice with the traditional French vinaigrette.
I might try again as it could have just been a bad day or the wrong person manning the crepe stand. That would be more likely for me if they were open for dinner because my fave thing to do is get my own savory crepe and split a dessert crepe, but that's a lot of food for breakfast or lunch. Perhaps I'll just pop in for a dessert crepe sometime.
I appreciate what they are trying to do, but maybe I was looking forward to this experience too much as I hadn't even known such a place existed in...
Read moreI'd like nothing more than to be a big fan of Mel's Petit Cafe. A cafe and creperie for a nice casual weekend breakfast? All without having to fight our way downtown? Sign me up!
It might be that I hyped myself up too much. To be honest the crepes were ok but... nothing to write home about.
We had the Banane chocolat and the Confiture to go. The chocolate banana crepe consisted if a nice sized crepe, folded over itself with about...5 or 6 slices of banana and what tasted like Hershey's syrup.
The confiture was a crepe with berry jelly. That's it. No chunks of fruit, no whipped cream, no powdered sugar no... anything. Pancake and jelly.
In fairness, and why I'm going with 3 stars, that's more or less what they advertise them as. So while I can't be SUPER disappointed, for $9 and $6 respectively... I'd expect a little more care and craft.
Both came in small pizza slice boxes with no utensils or napkins. Luckily CVS was open so we could buy something to eat the crepes with.
When I compare it to something like Our Little Secret on Curry Hollow Road, while lacking the cache and ambiance of a 'cafe', they make just as good a crepe but with loads of fresh fruit for the same price.
So yeah. Not bad. Would probably try again. Definitely get something else, but kinda disappointing for what you're getting and paying for... and if this is more or less typical? I think I'd forget Mel's pretty quickly on a...
Read moreThe crepes are fantastic. We ordered the "Tutti Fruitti" and the "Nutella". Both were superb. I've eaten at quite a few creperies while in France, and the quality of the crepes and ingredients used at Mel's are definitely on point, from the crepes themselves to the whipped cream.
However, the service and atmopshere were a bit lacking. Parking is a pain. The menu and specials are on the wall at an angle that you can't see clearly while waiting in line, if you can even call it a line. The crowd in front of the counter was chaos... people trying to read the menu, people trying to go up and down the stairs, people cutting in front to complain they got the wrong drinks. There was no clear definition of where and how a line should be formed in which you aren't getting in the way.
Once the order was in and we managed to find an open seat, it took over 20 minutes before anyone came over to clean off the previous patrons' dishes and mess. It took over another 20 minutes to get our order of 2 crepes, putting us close to an hours wait for a food that is typically made within minutes on the atreets of Paris. We were also told by the server that he has out of napkins to give us with our silverware, but we could grab some inside. Speed and efficiency are not the focus at Mel's, but if you have time and patience, the crepes could be worth the...
