Johns Grill was a sweet surprise in the best way—we found a new hidden gem! There is plenty of parking as it sets back from the waterfront a bit, closer to Rosehill Community Center. There is a small bar and then dinner room with small group tables. The decor is Ralph Lauren and country cottage vibe—very romantic for a date night for couples. For starters we enjoyed the crab cake and starter house salad paired with some inkblot wine. We typically don’t are not crab cake people but the waiter insisted we tried it, and it was delicious. Home made and was the perfect size for two or more people. For entrees, my fiance got the dry aged steak and I got the salmon with a blanc style sauce on it. My fiance makes amazing steak at home so much he rarely gets steak at restaurants, but he loved the dry aged steak. I think his eyes rolled back at first bite… I might have snuck a couple bites too. The salon was perfectly cooked and the blanc sauce was the perfect accompaniment since it was light and creamy. We ended the night with a brownie dessert that was heavenly for our cheat meal day that they comped since it was our anniversary. Wasn’t expecting that because it was a smaller restaurant. Service was perfect and he made wonderful recommendations. I normally don’t taste test the wine but there was a lot I didn’t recognize so he let us try a sample. Overall great experience and we will be back! I selfishly don’t want to tell others so it no longer becomes a hidden gem but here I am ;)

What a perfect place for a date night; dimly lit, slow-paced, small with a home-grown feel (like going to a friend's house), with superb high end dishes and a sizable selection of wine to boot. It's one of these places that serve each table 2-3 times max a night. So reservation is definitely recommended but once you're there it's not a rush to swallow everything and leave. It's high end without the obnoxious vibes. Here's everything our party of 4 ordered: Bottle of Daou wine Lavender lemon drop Breadbasket with the honey butter and salted butter Crab cakes Seafood linguine Filet mignon Ribeye x 2 John's salad Blood orange tart The crab cakes are a must. The steaks are huge and perfectly cooked to medium rare - so tender with simple salt/pepper. I'm not a fan of places that cover their delicious meat with a thick layer of salt/pepper where you no longer taste the meat. This place doesn't do that thank goodness. Even the breadbasket was good, mainly because of the two honey and salted butter spreads. Service was excellent, attentive without the pushiness. $394 for 4 before tips ($100/person). Worth it for the nice evening out with friends.

The food is OK. Not great but it’s edible. Portions are super small and WAY overpriced. If you like to dine out for good service definitely avoid John’s Grill!! I have not dined in at this restaurant and, after my takeout experience, I never will. After calling in an order I was told 1 hour 15 mins it would be ready. Kind of long wait but totally fine. So after 1 hour 15 mins I drive to pickup my order and it’s not ready and would be another 5-10 mins. Sort of annoying but no biggie and not a dealbreaker by any means. However After waiting in my car 45 mins for a call from the restaurant that the order was ready (no one bothered to call me) I went back inside and waited even longer for someone, anyone to help and finally after standing around being ignored a few mins someone notices I’m standing there and food is brought out. Not one apology or event a mention about the wait, not a word of thanks for being patient, not even a thank you for your order. Not even a have a good evening. And certainly not a enjoy your meal. Then I bring my food home and the portions are tiny considering the price! $30 for grilled prawns and $30 for a salmon dinner. Kids pasta barely enough for 1/2 a child. Not to mention greasy fingerprints all over the to-go boxes. Eww. The photos AREN’T “after I ate” photos they are BEFORE photos! that’s what I saw when opening the takeout boxes. Chintzy at best. I totally get it if they are short staffed and busy during nice weather and high season. And yes it’s very hard to do upscale takeout. But then don’t offer to-go if you can’t deliver at least a decent experience! If the service was any better this would be a 3-4 star review (still minus 1-2 stars for potions and food presentation) Finally maybe if they express gratitude for the business and acknowledge service was lacking they’d see more local repeat business. If you’re a Mukilteo resident I hope you’ve had a better experience at John’s Grill, I really wanted to love it but, until the service improves, I won’t go back. If you’re visiting from out of town looking for a nice dinner experience avoid John’s Grill and try the Thai place across the street!! Superior service and way bigger portions (especially for the price), great food to boot.

I’ve always passed this place in Old Towm Mukilteo but finally had the chance to celebrate my sister’s retirement in this neighborhood restaurant. I do not plan to go back again. First, there’s plenty of parking in the back. There’s option for indoor and outdoor parking. They have a great selection of wine. The service was good. However, the food was a disappointment. The calamari was well seasoned but thickly breaded and salty. The portion was quite small. The crispy brussel sprouts was the best dish in our order and is definitely worth a mention. Three of us ordered a cup of corn clam chowder but we had to return them back since they were extremely salty. Do not expect a basket of free bread- you have to pay $5 for a small basket . Our main meal presentations were beautiful. I ordered the Halibut Fish and Chips but the batter was as salty as the calamari. The prawns in shrimp and grits and Caesar’s salad were huge and well cooked. The grits was also salty. Two in our party ordered the beef stroganoff and they said it was good.

First time here and really enjoyed our experience, not just the food. They are apparently known for their crab cake, which we did not know, and ordered it but only with the servers suggestion. Originally we overlooked it as we saw the panko coating and thought it's probably over done or over fried, but we were very wrong. It was light, the sauce almost fluffy and the crab shined through. Their bartender and sommelier was absolutely wonderful, it was nice to talk wine with him, and he presented two incredibly different choices that absolutely surprised me, a sancerre and viognier, both are not my favorite varietals but the viognier was perfect with the crab cake and the sancerre with my 4oz steak. Yes I said 4oz, the first I have seen on a menu ever!!! I can't do big meals and this place has a longer list of small bites, I'll be back just for this alone!! Staff was friendly, educational and perfectly attentive!
