The ambiance at Traceys is breathtaking, and their close proximity to Lake Superior makes dining here a must if you’re in the area. The menu is elaborate and eye catching to anyone who has a foody bone in their body. Using words like “Lamb lollipops” and “American Wagyu.” As someone who has experienced true lamb lollipops and true American Wagyu beef, I can honestly say that the menu, in my opinion, is very misleading.
We started our meal with some cocktails and small plate appetizers. Traceys take on a manahtten was INCREDIBLE, and they’re sparkling Sangria was the perfect combination of sweet, sour, and bitter. The appetizers we ordered were the meatballs al forno and the seared steak tetaki. The seared steak dish was delicious and full of flavor, with the chili’s and roasted garlic adding beauty and flavor to the whole dish. Although it was on the salty side, I would order 100 times over! The meatball dish however was a MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT. The menu called it an al forno, meaning baked in the oven, but the dish was so cold we were certain it was meant to be served cold? The flavor was ok but not even close to worth what we paid for them. Seriously though, it was so cold we didn’t say anything because we were certain it was meant to be that cold.
For entrees we shared the lamb lollipops and the American Wagyu fillet. I was severely disappointed with the way the lamb lollipops were cooked and served. When I see the word “lollipop” next to a lamb dish on a menu I get real excited and can’t help but imagine 2-3 beautiful medium rare cuts of lamb plated to show off their medium rare beauty. The dish that Traceys produced was the complete opposite… the lamb was seared on each side and served medium, which lead to a more gamier flavor and did not render most of the fat cap. The sizes were also about half the size you would imagine them to be… The American Wagyu filet was cooked a perfect medium rare, however the steak was clearly not rested and all those wonderful juices and flavor bled all over the plate as soon as I cut into it which just ended up drying out the meat… the flavor was wonderful but lead me questioning if it was truly Wagyu or just some clever menu marketing to charge $60 dollars for a $25 dollar steak. The chocolate cake we had for desert was AMAZING! So amazing I wish we would’ve ordered another piece to go!
The restaurant was clearly understaffed, but I feel they made up for it with fast and effective service. Throughout our dining experience there was a tall gentlemen walking around, not sure if he is the GM or owner, but was clearly someone of an authoritative nature. He didn’t Introduce himself and we were questioning if he even worked at the establishment… but he made it very clear that he was more concerned about the type of scotch/bourbon he had on the liquor shelf then the concern he had for the guests and their dining experience. After a while we realized he worked there after he asked us how our meal was, after we said it was fine he walked away and didn’t say anything else.
All and all it was an ok experience, but no where near the expectations we had. Maybe we are too nit picky but if we are paying $200+ for a meal, I would expect every aspect of that meal to be memorable,...
Read moreFirst let me get the negative out of the way. My wife and I both order a filet. At $68 for the dish I would never expect to be served an end cut from the butt of the tenderloin. No way! Then, it was ordered medium rare. It was room temp to cool and left a bloody pool on my wifes plate. It was to put it in plain terms, the worst piece of meat Ive ever seen served in my 73 years. Their "chef" is no chef and should have been embarrassed to plate it. A big fat ZERO! NOW, how do they handle it at the restaurant. We were approached by the front end manager Nicolas who apologized way more than needed. He was a gentleman and a pro! He was all class and wanted to do anything he could to fix the issue. That was what we left with in our spirit when we departed. At restaurants, shit happens. When it does, how do you handle it. So in the end, they removed my wifes plate feom the bill which was the correct thing to do because she didnt eat it, nor should she have. But the class that young man showed was beyond the environment he was in. He will go far. Our waitress was a nice young lady who did her best. I'd like to add, we came with our own wine which when opened had turned. It was Nicolas who went to his stock room to pull out a good bottle that he suggested to us. Again, going above and beyond. And that was prior to the steak incident, so his graciousness is a pattern not just a response to a problem. Our happiness was his priority. As it should be in the service industry. He understands the mission. Bottom line for Tracy's restaurant, your cook? And he is a cook because no self respecting chef puts that meat on a plate, needs to reconsider his life choices. But Nicolas saved it from being a disaster single handedly. He's the kind of man I would want working for me. ...
Read moreRestaurant atmosphere is quaint, small and intimate. Food was good, nothing spectacular, especially at the price point. With that said higher prices are expected this far up north and in tourist areas. The problems I experienced were my two teenage boys found nothing they liked on the menu and the lack of service from our server.
The food is clearly not focused on families that travel through the area but more on couples looking for a evening out or a few drinks while socializing. If families are not the target audience of the restaurant I can't falut them for that.
What I can fault The restaurant for is bad service from the wait staff. The food took awhile to come to the table, not a problem as food is made to order. While waiting 20 to 25 mins for our food my wife finished her glass of wine and youngest finished his drink. Not once in that time did our server Katie come check on us. When the food was presented to us I ask our server if my Wife could have another glass of wine and my youngest a refill. Once the drinks came the server gave us the standard, " is everything ok". After that we did not see her again until we were well finished with our meals. During that time I finished my drink and placed it on the Edge of the table hoping she would ask if I wanted another. No luck instead as she dropped our bill off at the table she took a drink request from the table next to ours and never bothered focusing her attention to ours. Not surprisingly took sometime to get the server to bring pick up our payment as well.
The server experience did not make the experience feel worth the price. Instead made it feel like a Steak and Shake or...
