4 stars. Pasties-meat and veggies baked in pastry-are big in this area, assuming from the mining/coal history. Small shop with menu of five pasties on our visit. The traditional is a beef/pork blend with numerous vegetables including rutabaga which is rarely seen on menus. Other choices were chicken, veggie, breakfast, & gluten free. The pastry around these softball size meals was light and flaky, barely holding the filling. Best to eat with fork. The filling is reminiscent of a pot pie, but without the “gravy”. Chicken had a spice profile with something creating a level of heat-cayenne?-that was unexpected and took away from my enjoyment unfortunately. Beef/pork was delicious and imo a better choice. If you visit here, there is (at least during our time) a superstar menu item hiding in plain sight. On the counter they sell large square slices of homemade carrot cake. We enjoy this almost everywhere we go and regularly at home. I thought I had found the best anywhere at a bakery in So Cal but I can say unequivocally that this is THE BEST I have ever had!!! Moist, herbaceous, loaded with carrot, lots of sweet coconut, and just the right amount of raisins. Topped with a perfect portion of homemade frosting, with cream cheese I believe. Added a slice to our original lunch visit and the next day had to go get another slice. If you like carrot cake, on a visit here or even if you have to take a side trip to get here, it’s a 100% do...
Read moreThe pasty is a Yooper specialty that has a special place in the heart of all mankind. This being the case, no half hearted pasty should ever dare touch the pallet of a yooper. Therefore, I have gone to Munising’s top pasty restaurants to determine who is the king of pasties in Munising. I ordered the top selling pasties for each establishment, being the breakfast pasty from Miners and the traditional with gravy from Muldoons.
Both Pasties had a solid size comparison that gives you a solid bang-for-your-buck and won’t leave your stomach empty. Next, Muldoons did take the lead on the looks of the pasty; having it look more like a traditional pasty and was fully enclosed with the crust. However, after a thorough taste review, both pasties tasted delectable. The gravy from Muldoons complimented the pasty with a punch of flavor but was not worth the cost of 2 dollars. The hot sause from Miners added a unique taste that properly complemented the dish.
With regards to the pasty itself, Muldoons, while a little larger in size, did not live up to the hype. Overall was blander than Miners. While miners was a little more salty, the flavor produced will go done in pasty history.
If your husband were working in the copper mines, don’t disappoint him with a Muldoons pasty but treat him well with a...
Read moreWe chose to work at the pictured rocks festival this weekend because we wanted p¹¹¹÷++for ²q)⁰⁰]0asties! We have had several along highway 2 and Muldoons in the past and Muldoons had been our favorite. When we arrived we had some at Muldoons. They were not as good as we remembered. At the festival a local lady told us that she liked miners better. For lunch, we got the yoopers and they were fabulous! My husband said that he loved that there was plenty of meat in them and that the other place was light on meat and heavy on potatoes. Also the other place had dry crust, but miners crust was moist and light. We went back for lunch the next day and learned that there was a breakfast pastie! They were sold out, so we had a chicken and a yooper. The chicken was good, but not my favorite. At supper we had a vegan and a yooper. Vegan good but still preferred the yooper! We just had to try the breakfast pastie, so we lingered until they opened on Monday. I found my new favorite!! The breakfast Pastie was incredible!!!! I wish I had tried them the sooner! As pastie Conneseuers, we vote #1 on crust, #1 on GENEROUS meat! #1 pastie is miners yooper and #1 breakfaat!. Staff was friendly and helpful. And eating at veterans park is an all around...
