I have wanted to take my wife since I heard the chef was nominated for the James Beard. When I made the reservations I indicated that I am vegetarian and my wife is Hindu veg (no eggs). I was a little concerned we would be difficult to accommodate but when we arrived, one of the owners seated us and gave my wife a menu marked with vegetarian dishes and they had crossed out by hand anything with egg. This was above and beyond the service elsewhere.
We ordered nearly everything vegetarian. As other reviews mention, the portions are quite small though I was expecting that. The broth was delicious though thinner than I had imagined. The beet/banana/habanero dish was good. The cucumber/seaweed/nasturtium tasted good, but was cut so thin it was quite hard to eat. I had imagined the nasturtium might be actual flowers but it was oil, making the cucumbers slippery and messy. I ordered the Spanish tortilla for myself knowing my wife couldn't eat it because the reviews were so good. The consistsncy was perfect, but it was surprisingly unflavorful. I think the maitake was a favorite for my wife. It was quite good but a little salty.
For dessert we had Root beer/walnut/dark chocolate. It was good, but too sweet for me so my wife finished it.
We both had cocktails though I can't remeber what they were. As I was checking the scotch menu thinking of a second drink, the waitress got the other owner to come help me decide. He didn't balk when I out a price limit on it and he chose a great scotch for me based on my flavor preferences.
Their attention to our dietary needs and preferences was far above the norm and this was much more attention than I have received from owners at most other restaurants. I also appreciated the good service and upscare offerings without snobby behavior from the staff.
We were pleased with our food though I would be lying if I said we didn't go home to eat some leftover pizza an hour or two later because we weren't full. I wouldn't recommend going when you are famished. Though we enjoyed our meal, I would need a quite different menu to return as it is limited and trying each thing once was enough. Overall worth...
Read moreMy wife and I tried this restaurant based on an article claiming this was one of the ten best restaurants in Nashville. Both of us like a variety of cuisines and neither of us are picky eaters. The first thing that caught my attention was the menu. There were about 10 items on the menu with no description of what you were getting. We asked our waitress to please explain the menu as we had never eaten there before. She said that the items were usually shared and most people ordered around 6 items for their meal. Most of the items were around $12-$14 with the most expensive dish being $62. We order 2 items, the Italian tortilla and a sticky rice dish. The waitress did nothing to prepare us for the fact that neither of these dishes looked like a tortilla or rice. The "tortilla" more closely resembled a partially fried piece of Tofu. The "rice" was served in a bowl and was more like rice that had been extremely overcooked then molded into little cylindrical 1/2" rolls. (The sauce did have good flavor). These were not "shareable" portions. I would estimate our rice bowl to have about 2 tablespoons of food in it. The portions were small, the food was bland, and the price was high for what you received. We asked for our check and went somewhere else to eat. It was likely the worst $42 I've ever spent on food. The service wasn't terrible but we definitely did not get a warm welcoming vibe the entire time we were there. The entire experience was somewhat odd. Really hate leaving a 1* but I try to be honest with my reviews and this is my honest opinion....
Read moreUnfortunately, this restaurant is way overrated. We had a terrible experience with our food and my drink. I ordered a gin & tonic #5. It very much tasted like lemon water, although I have to admit that the amount of gin was fine. The wine my partner ordered was good. Then, we ordered olives, grilled bread, bone marrow, and chicken gizzards. To our surprise, the olives were not only warm (who heats up olives!?!?) but also small. You can get much better olives in any Publix store. The bread was over-grilled, almost burned. The butter and trout roe were tasty, though. Then, we received a cup of a dense mass of bone marrow. The first table spoon tasted ok, but then it was impossible to keep eating it. It was just too cloying/tedious. They should serve it with pita bread or something else, because of its strong flavor. At that point we decided to leave and asked for the check. Our server didn't ask if everything was ok, but instead forced us to pay for the chicken gizzards that we ordered but took some 20 minutes to arrive. We decided to take them home and give them another opportunity the next day. We microwaved them, but the odor was so bad, that we didn't dare to eat them. We threw them away. I am not sure if they changed the cook or something, but it doesn't deserve even half of the...
