For being the sixth highest-rated donut joint in the city based on user reviews, Shipleys is a colossal disappointment! I don't know why the ratings are so skewed and how this particular Shipley's gets away with it. But patrons must not be tasting what this donut afficionado is. Of course. I wouldn't say the average Shipley's customer is very discerning. So let's face it, this is nothing more than a national chain of 382 stores that peddles mediocre pastries to turn a profit while failing to regulate local quality. It's essentially the McDonald's of donuts.
Any time I stop by at midday, they haven't made enough donuts to last that long and haven't seemed to make additional batches either. Only the dregs remain on the shelves with the most popular options long gone. And even when I come by in the morning, the donuts taste surprisingly stale for so early in the day. I have to wonder how that's possible and if they were made very early or just recycled from the previous day. It's a poorly run store that's just another outlet for a giant, overrated franchise. Pick any local mom-and-pop donut shop and you'll find a much better product.
I'm done giving Shipley's chances to impress me and tired of stale donuts and empty shelves. So while my daily drive takes me right past their store, I'm finally abandoning convenience and driving across town for the superior donut choices in East Nasty, Wilco, even nearby...

Alright, letâs talk about it.
I pulled up to Shivelyâs in Donelson and grabbed that sausage and cheese croissant â no egg. Off rip, that joint was struggle-wrapped. Croissant wasnât even all the way opened, meat was hanging out like it clocked in late and didnât care. Dry. Sad. Disrespectful, even. Taste-wise? That sandwich was a cold 2 outta 10. Ainât no way Iâm letting that slide past quality control â not tasty approved.
BUT â letâs talk redemption. I had to double back with an apple fritter, and okay⌠now we talkinâ! Crispy, glazed right, edges hittinâ, and it didnât fall apart like some cheap ones do. That fritter brought the score up. Saved the review from a total shutdown. I like mine soft but that crispy texture lowkey worked.
Inside? Spotless. Folks was in and out, so the community rock with it â and I canât knock that. Just not my vibe on that croissant at all.
Final Say: đĽ Croissant? Nah, donât even waste your mouth. đ Apple Fritter? Worth the visit. 𧟠Clean environment, friendly traffic.
Verdict: 3/5 â Respectable but not Tayst Approved. Sandwich needs a whole rework.

Read moreWow. When youâre wanting nothing more than a simple, classic tasting donut, this place beats out any competition. The texture is still light and soft like a regular donut, but the dough is denser and has more âchewâ and subtle sweetness to it. It is a delicate, perfect balance of sweetness to dough. Now, I tried their chocolate covered âbow tieâ and original glazed âbow tieâ (bow tie is just a regular donut but shaped into a large bow tie, so extra bang for your buck!). Extremely, extremely good.
But that wasnât even the best thing here. You MUST get a butter roll when you are here. No exceptions. This is essentially a giant cinnamon roll, but instead of cinnamon, just warm, melted butter and icing. This was decadent in every sense of the word. That dense, chewy roll coated in a tasty butter and icing is exactly what I needed in a dessert. If you come here and do not get this, you have truly missed out on a gem in the dessert/bakery world.
A friend has recommended that I try their maple glazed donut, and believe me, I will be trying many of their other items (including more butter rolls) in the...
