Goodwin's Speakeasy — Restaurant in New Braunfels

Good idea, poor execution. The bartender was very nice and skilled. The drinks were quite good. The atmosphere and amenities were horrible. There is no room, but that was expected. However, one of the seating areas is just the entry area. Not real cozy. The other seating area actually is part of the bathroom. Actually, the bathroom is a water closet with the sink for washing hands in the seating area. The worst part of that room is it's also how employees get to the service area for the speakeasy's bar and Gruene Grove's bar. So, a LOT of traffic in and out while you're trying to enjoy your drink and conversation. The worst part of it is the door to that area is just on a spring, so the whole time we were there all we heard was "SLAM! SLAM! SLAM!" My absolute favorite bar. I have been coning to Goodwins since 2019 amd it always impresses with the bartender's knowlege and care for each drink. They have a great menu but they are knowledgeable enough to make nearly any drink off the top of their heads and are wonderful at making inprovisations or new drinks based on your preference. If you like a speakeasy style experience then is an ok place. I like cocktails a lot and found this place lacking. I stayed up stairs in the open area and just had beers. Classic cocktails had house made names, the bartender muddled orange peel in a glass for an old fashioned, and the vermouth had a weird taste which indicated it had not been refrigerated. I realize this seems real nit picky, but like I said, I like well done mixed drinks. If you are really in to the cocktail experience then there is another local haunt...
