July 9th, Went to Crescent City Steak House, after leaving my brother's house. He lives right off Esplanade.
Since 2002, I've been dining at the Crescent City Steak House. My brother and I have family and business interests together and this has always been our go to place.
Crescent City Steak House, over the years has so impressed up, that About a week or two before Christmas, 2015, we even had a Christmas gathering with a small group of business associates in their back room. it was awesome. We sold that business shortly after that awesome meal, and I moved full time to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Our past associates are still talking about perfect the restaurant, food and service was. For me, it was exactly as I expected it to be.
Today my brother and I met for business at his home. He couldn't join us for diner at the Crescent City Steak House, so my honey and I headed over. It was Jack's 1st time there.
He ordered the Cowboy Steak, Caesar Salad, beer, and Asparagus. I ordered the Filet (which I always get and have always loved), spinach, and potatoes au gratin, and tea. Both steaks, medium rare.
Our food arrived, I started to cut the Filet, it was so tough... and not pink.... well done. When the waitress returned with the bread, I showed her, she asked me to cut it down the center, I did and found the meat was also tough to cut and not red, kind of grayish.
The Waitress took it to the kitchen and a few minutes later another woman (maybe the Hostess?) returned to tell me it was cooked right.... that the lighting was bad where I was sitting. I explained the meat was so tough it was difficult to cut and asked her to try it, to also try cutting it.
The Hostess (?) returned from the Kitchen and explained that the Filet had been cut from a strip of Filets, that this strip of meat had more tendons than usual and that I needed to pick another type of steak, since they didn't think I would be happy with any of the filets that would be cut from this strip of meat. Every Filet cut from this strip was going to be tough.
I told her I only liked the Filet cut and that I guess I would not be having steak. She told me there would be no charge for my Filet. I would certainly hope not. I had bread and sides, barely spoke with honey and knew this was the very last time I would eat there.
I'm not sure how many Filets can be cut from that strip, I'm imagining a dozen or more because it was clear, every single person who ordered a Filet this night at the Crescent City Steak House, was getting one like the one I received, too tough to eat. Which is the exact opposite of what anyone who orders a Filet steak, cooked medium rare, is expecting.
I found this shocking..... knowing this cut was unacceptable, it was their plan to continue to serve it. Instead of sealing this cut up and returning it to their supplier, they were just going to see how many folks would accept it without complaining. I find it impossible to believe anyone who orders a Filet prepared any other way than well done, could possibly be happy with the steak.
When the check came, it was $71 and change, plus a $12 tip.
I would have been happy to have paid for steak of the same caliber I've received the 100 other times I've dined here. This experience was very disturbing. On so many levels. I'm thinking something has changed. A new manager? New Owners? Bad cook? Awful supplier? Too lazy to open another cut of meat? Or just bound and determined everyone was getting a horrid Filet this night?
I don't come to New Orleans that often. Maybe once a month now. I was prepared to pay twice as much for nice Sunday evening meal with my honey, for a relaxing, stress free, meal, where based on past experience, I had every right to expect nothing less. What a disappointment.
Prior to this, Crescent City Steak House, was my favorite dining place in New Orleans.... but not anymore. In NOLA, there are many choices, knowing they will serve a bad cut of steak, on purpose makes this my last time for choosing Crescent City...

A reservation was made for a party of 11 to celebrate my 61st birthday on December 4, 2021. Crescent City Steaks was chosen after deciding that we would try somewhere new, local, and had good reviews. In the past, I've eaten steaks at Ruth's Chris Steak House, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse, Chophouse, and Sullivan's Steakhouse, all of which were worthy of my time, palate, and money! This place, Crescent City Steaks was absolutely HORRIBLE!!! The staff, the service, the food, the restrooms, the chairs, the water glasses.... all low level, no, I digress, make that no level!! I know this establishment is used to handling large groups, so I'm not sure what the problem was with my table, which consisted of family and friends. We were all well-mannered and dressed appropriately. Our group consisted of 4 males-ages 19, 31, 36, and 40: 7 females-ages 28, 29, 30, 34, 58, 60, and 61. No teeny-boppers, no troublemakers, no celebrities, no scam artists, no clowns! Just decent, educated, working, hungry, regular people expecting to eat, drink, laugh, celebrate, their loved one's birthday. All we wanted was our food and drinks delivered to our table as ordered. However, that is not what happened. There were (2) glasses of water that was compromised/dirty. The group order consisted of (5) different cuts of steaks, all cooked well done, as per the menu description. All (5) steaks were brought to the table with pink centers and blood drippage on the plates. When brought to the waitress' attention, she replied "when the steaks are thick and ordered to be cooked well-done, they should be requested as butterflied". She then proceeded to pick up the plates and return them to the kitchen for further cooking. Keep in mind that had she mentioned the disclosure about the well-done steaks being thick and needing to be butterflied, that's what we would have requested. A few minutes later, the steaks returned and guess what, still pink centers, still bloody! The waitress saw and heard our disgust about the steaks still not being correct!!! She offered no apology, no explanation, no empathy, no nothing!!! She left the table and we decided that we'd just take the steaks home and cook them further. The night was a bust! When she returned, we asked for go boxes and the check. Our food bill was $691.00, and the bar tab was $195.00. Since it was a large group, the 20% gratuity was included. Needless to say, none of the staff that we encountered, specifically the waitress/server deserved a dime!!! But even paying the bill was a problem! Since we had a large group, we wanted to pay the food bill with half in cash and the other half with a bank card. We were told that couldn't be done. Now once again, I'm more than sure that at some point, this request has been made by others and processed as such. So, after seeing that was an issue, the bill was just paid in full and with cash!! Luckily someone in the group was foolish enough to have that kind of cash on them at that time of night!!! The quality of food and method of payment were the biggest issues, however in addition to all of that, the greeter/hostess wasn't very friendly or inviting towards us. It seemed as though we were in the way as we sat in the lobby area waiting for everyone that was included in the group. The restrooms are small, one toilet stall, one sink, unkept, no changing table for infants, and no locks on the entry door. The chairs at the table are rickety and not very sturdy. So, like I said at the beginning of this very long, true story and disappointing birthday celebration (or lack thereof), "ONE AND DONE!" Crescent City Steaks located at 1001 N. Broad Street-New Orleans, LA. 70119 will NEVER see me or any of my family and friends again!!! PERIODT!!!! This business deserves "no stars". But since I had to make a selection in order for this to post, I chose 1 star. But honestly, the time has come. The doors should be closed and locked permanently! After 87 years in business, it has run its course,...
Read moreIf underwhelming is in the dictionary, Crescent City Steaks should be the photo. Took my mom here for dinner and we were not impressed to say the least. Let’s start with the atmosphere. It was a pretty packed house, all tables really close to each other. The older lady sitting at the table next to us dropped her fork and knife and they fell on my foot. That’s how close we were. No biggie though, we actually enjoyed the 1940s feel and decor.
To start, we got the onion rings based off of reviews and they were extremely bland. Literally tasted like the batter was made of all purpose flour and water, that’s it. Hard to chew and no flavor whatsoever. Definitely nothing to call home about. Then we tried the stuffed mushrooms. They were just ok thanks to the dipping sauce but again, underwhelming and lacked flavor. The asparagus was nothing special. Probably steamed in a pan with water and placed on the plate with, you guessed it….no flavor or so much as a parmesan and olive oil toss.
We waited patiently for what should have been the grand finale of cowboy ribeye, and according to reviews this was going to blow us away. Well…..I’m still waiting for the wind. What a huge disappointment! How do I say this politically correct? The ppl who gave rave reviews must have been of a certain age and pigment. The flavors (or should I say lack thereof) were non existent. For such a beautiful steak, there was absolutely no seasoning. Literally just meat and butter/grease. I get my steaks medium rare and although it was perfectly cooked, it lacked the basic steakhouse flavor I was looking for. I also believe they’re pan seared so don’t expect that chargrilled taste. Like they took it out of the fridge and cooked it. Not a smidgen of flavor. Nothing. NADA! B.L.A.N.D! This does not compare to the Ruth’s Chris in New Orleans or, dare I say it, even Texas Roadhouse! Bummer.
New Orleans is such a vibrant city full of color and spectacular flavors that people travel from all over the world to experience! And this, just isn’t it. Such a disappointment. The only thing we had that was satisfying was the drinks. They were strong and sweet served in a martini glass (I believe it was called the blushing lady?).
Maybe in the 1930s this place was nice. But since then we’ve developed things like salt! And pepper! Someone should give Crescent City steaks the memo. Save your money, try...
