Four stars for the drinks and three for the food. The Magazine location is where I usually end up going as it is close to my house (and Sunday they usually have happy hour all day and I like to get my double margarita for the price of a single). I need to disclose that I'm not really a big fan of Mexican (and I got really REALLY burned out on Mexican food and anything wrapped in a tortilla while I was exiled to Austin for a year and half due to Katrina). They often play headbanger music (sometimes WAY too loud) so that is a bit of a strange combo of Mexican food meets goth death metal.
This can be a great place to eat by yourself and grab a quick bite to eat or go with others and hang out for awhile. I usually get either the tacos or enchiladas here as it is a quick and relatively cheap meal (they usually bring you the green and red sauce but you have to REQUEST the yellow habanero sauce). They have a good rotation of different specials (as much variety as can be expected within the limited repertoire of everything has to involve a tortilla in someway Tex-Mex food). It does get very crowded sometimes and there can be a wait. The bar usually turns over pretty quick but some days people just linger for awhile.
They have some very well decorated people working here (and by decorated I mean seriously tattooed up) so it can be entertaining just to watch the staff in action and they do usually provide really good service (the Mid-City location is famous for bad service and that is why I rarely go there). They make some of the best margarita's in New Orleans and have some good cold beer so a great place to drink and decent place to eat.
I used to go here weekly or several times per week as it was a good value. During the lockdowns they made some choices here that I can't support so I don't go...
Read moreMe and a friend were here on a slightly busy-ish Thursday evening during Mardi Gras. Sat at the small bar ( for 10 mins before we had to ask for service) and the bartender was probably the rudest bartender that I have ever come across. Not just to us, but it was painful to watch him interact with other customers also. We were shocked at how he treated people. So much to the point that we didn't finish our food and we left. It was a bit messy due to the parade on near by and people coming in and out for take away drinks and food - but that is no excuse. I also work in the industry as a bartender and while I understand it can be frustrating when it's busy there is absolutely no way I would ever treat people like that. The guy had a miserable face on the entire time and looked genuinely pissed off that we were trying to give him business. We were in great spirits before we came in and he honestly ruined the good buzz that we were on. Unfortunate that the other reviews seem promising but it goes to show that one person can ruin an entire experience. We sat at the end of the bar which was beside the entrance for take away drinks and food and he treated every single person like they were a burden. People came in smiling and friendly and he barely made eye contact and was extremely rude. If I had gotten his name I would have contacted management to let them know this guy is bringing everyone down. Will definitely...
Read moreWe have been in here many many times and loved it! Yesterday however was horrific (we were there at 3). There were 4 tables sat and it looked like they all had their food. Our waiter stood at the door and never went back to check for our food. Over a half hour later ( yes we timed it) he shows up with flaming hot plates with the worst looking food ever. It was obvious that these had been sitting under the heat lamp for a LONG TIME.
I got chicken enchiladas with red sauce and there was very little meat that was dried out. I wanted red sauce, and if there was any, it was baked on. The tortillas were crunchy and I got black beans even though the menu said refried.
My husband got the flying enchiladas which is supposed to be 3 different enchiladas ( beef, chicken, shrimp) with a different sauce on each one. The meats were all mixed together with one sauce that was again baked on with dried crunchy tortillas.
I took mine home (never ended up eating it) and my husband ate part of his. The only reason we didn't say anything is because we couldn't get the waiters attention away from whatever he was playing with at the podium.
I don't know who to blame more, the waiter that paid no attention to anything, or the cooks that got the orders wrong with...
