While atop the Hermann the German monument under the cape of our King, I ran into a fellow who was visiting with his 2 young daughters. We chatted about how this was the best view of New Ulm and he agreed but stated that he was more excited about getting donuts at Backerei afterwards and recommended I do the same. So after exiting the monument and rejoining with my younger foodie sister in the car I mentioned the shop and she knew it by name. OK. We're going since we had time to kill before heading to the 1PM tour at Schell's.
The shop is in downtown on the corner and given that this was a summer and holiday weekend, a Tuesday for that matter, the streets were bare but the coffee shop was patronized with folks both sitting at the tables and patrons coming in and out. Good foot traffic is a good sign. The interior is plain and seems under decorated, but I am not swayed by atmosphere but I mention it in case you are one who is looking for a modern coffee shop environment,. This is not that. We selected an assortment of goods and found ourselves a table. Our selection consisted of s a few cookies and some donuts. Now, I know this place has a notable positive reputation and I am not here to challenge it. However, our experience was not bad but not notable either. But... as any true donut connoisseur knows, you cannot judge a shop based on baked goods that are hours old, so this was not a condemning experience.
The next morning, my wife and I headed back to Backerei to get fresher donuts and selected an assortment of 4, one of which was an apple turnover. Took it home and had another tasting. Good stuff!! My wife preferred the Apple turnover of the lot expressing it was one of the best she has ever had. I personally noted how 'chewy' the dough was, a characteristic I noted in my previous visit and why i was interested in coming back. To me, this is relatively unique in terms of dough consistency I don't find in many other donuts. Every item we chose was good. I can only imagine how much better they would have been if we came even earlier. Most donuts fresh would taste great as it is hard to find a bad fresh donut, but the Backerei donut has a character. I recommend it but please try and get it as close to opening time as possible or you may walk away...
Read moreNow, allot of people love this place and I really do see why! It has the most delicious pastries and they make so many yummy smelling things. But... They don't seem to keep the shop clean! I stopped by the other day and sat inside for almost an hour while it wasn't all that busy and the floors, tables, and chairs remained covered in pastry leftovers. The floor was the worst next to the tables, sticky and filthy from lack of mopping. And I know this can't be helped, but I don't think I'd want to eat in at a place that is a flies hub for eating whatever they can. Don't get me wrong, though. The service is great as well as the food, but I will not be eating inside due to poor...
Read moreDoughnuts were very good, I walked in later in the day so I’m sure they’re even better in the morning! I think it’s a stretch to call it a coffee shop though, when I want a coffee shop im thinking espresso & this was a self serve cappuccino machine & a tank of coffee. I was a little disappointed to see that it’s not what I expected of a coffee shop when I walked in but the doughnuts helped & they’re the real main character. General vibe is positive but the place could use a...
