Caffeine Underground offers exquisitely priced menu options of which are slightly above average. For the price point, I would consider their items fair. In the context of the neighborhood, good. I enjoy their coffee.
However, it is not very diverse or creative. The savory options are lacking.
The environment of Caffeine Underground is unclear. The decor has deteriorated seriously the last few months. The lighting does little to distract from the cheap, low quality furniture that is barely functional. Interestingly, the fire alarm goes off randomly without a trigger. The art on the wall is unique, but the styles do not mesh well together. Old posters that have grown irrelevant litter various surfaces. Merchandise is offered, however, is difficult to browse because it is often tucked and hidden. This likely is impacting sales. The biggest distraction of all is the filth. The bathroom reeks strongly of pee. There is no soap dispenser, but always a mostly empty soap bottle mixed with water.
The shows and events that occur in the cafe could use better coordination. They happen on short notice, and the environment thus can become unclear. A cafe utilized for quiet study can become a random gathering location for a poetry slam.
Furniture for a cafe can be cheap, especially from an outlet. I suggest even Ikea chairs — as low as $15.
I suggest that staff could spruce up the space by dusting and polishing the areas. If stock has not sold in several months, it is time to toss it out, I am afraid. It is contributing to clutter.
Finally, there is no reason to extend hours during low patronage days to 11pm. This actually can hurt profit.
Hope this helps and thank you kindly for...
Read moreI'm a barista myself and can say: the coffee here is good! The location is very convenient to me, but I have to say after my first few times coming -I told myself I wouldn't go back.
It feels and looks cluttered and dirty. Old ripped flyers from months ago are still hanging, random paintings hanging on by a thread, furniture on its last leg, halloween decorations up even though its almost february, and random candies or pins displayed on a random shelf to buy (i think.) I just dont feel like I could comfortably sit there with my coffee.
Also, The owner is always kind- but the other barista was always rude. He has slammed milk or other objects down out of frustration (which feels directed at the customer) or looked at me in the line while the person in front is finishing on the screen, and said in an annoyed tone, "what do you want?" in taking my order. Again, as a barista, I couldn't imagine interacting with anyone this way? I have other friends in the neighborhood that avoid this shop because of...
Read moreWas disappointed and underwhelmed by this place. Gave this place a try because of the good reviews, but was disappointed! I got the Yerba mate and grilled cheese sandwich with three cheeses. The Yerba mate didn’t have much of a taste. The Yerba mate you get from the super markets, actually tastes way better. The grilled cheese sandwich was ok, nothing special. It was $7, and you can make the same grilled cheese at home that costs $3-$4 to make. The decor/ambience of the store felt like a flea market, with a bunch of random and eclectic furniture thrown in together. The art was funky, with a lot of color and animals on it. The place had a bunch of punk rocker type customers in it. This place didn’t really give me the “community feel” that it was going for. The customer service was ok, the guy who served me was mediocre. It wasn’t the best or the worst. It’s located in a quiet residential area, about a 10 minute walk from the train station.
