I never thought I'd be writing this review but here it goes:
I've been coming here since the grand opening. Their pastries, cakes, and even savory dishes are quite delicious. The young female employees behind the register are very welcoming and sweet as well. However, my experience today will be the last time I step foot into this place.
With my small dog, I was denied service. For someone who visits Divan once a week and sometimes twice a week, I've seen the manager plenty of times. A short, dark blonde Turkish woman who goes by the name of Binnur manages the store and her daughter also works there as well. For some reason today, I wasn't allowed to order anything after double checking with the cashier and manager to see if it's possible for me to order items with my dog next to me. The manager waved her hand in such a rude way, shooing me out the place and didn't even bother to explain why. I respect restaurant policies and rules, but for the first time in years I've never seen her act like that. The staff knows me pretty well, especially since I do work in their outdoor patio space and they have never had a problem serving me with my dog.
The young ladies behind the counter were trying their best to apologize, but I am truly appalled by the manager. How can a woman be that rude and make such comments in a busy restaurant? It didn't make it any better where customers were staring and I felt so left out. To the manager: you need to take better precautions when approaching customers because your behavior is disgusting. On numerous occasions, you and your daughter have mistreated customers with disgusting attitudes and lack of customer service....
Read moreI live nearby but, I never been into the bakery until recently. Oh boy, am I glad I did! They currently are only doing takeout but, I still bought a few treats to enjoy. It was very hard not to rip open the package and devour the goodies as soon as I stepped outside.
I bought two types of baklava and both were tasty. They have quite a few different types but, pistachio is my personal favorite. I also bought this milky creamy caramel topped cake. It reminds me of a bit of Tres Leches cake with a caramel-y topping.
The woman on staff was very friendly and polite. She offered a lot of suggestions and took the time to explain some of the items.
The reason why this isn't a 5-star bakery and I am would visit every single day is because the prices jumped a lot. Baklava used to be 4 pieces for a $1 and the cakes were like under $5 a slice. Now, the baklava is priced per pound from $10.99 to $16.69. I bought 2 pieces of baklava and piece of cake and the total was a little more than $12. There is also a minimum charge of $10/12 to use a...
Read moreThe Divan Bakery, perched at the meeting point of Midwood and Sheepshead Bay, is the kind of place that makes you wonder why more bakeries don’t try harder. It isn’t just a bakery, though the pastries—rich, expertly crafted, and unapologetically decadent—could easily justify its existence on their own. It’s also a café, and one with unexpected ambition.
The veggie omelet is a surprise. Delicately folded, generously filled, and cooked with the precision you’d expect from a kitchen chasing Michelin stars, it belongs in a different conversation than the standard diner or brunch spot fare. Pair it with a strong, fragrant Turkish tea, served in a tulip-shaped glass that seems designed to stretch out the moment just a little longer.
Divan Bakery isn’t the kind of place that needs to rely on its location to draw customers—it would stand out anywhere. And in a city where bakeries are abundant but truly great ones are rare, that’s worth paying...
