Notwithstanding the hype, they have pretty decent pizza slices at an ok price. I stumbled here after trying some of the other pizza in the area without even knowing it was supposed to be a NY institution until I saw the celebrity cutouts on the wall. I wouldn't come here for my "last meal on earth" like one of those celebrities claims he would (I lost a little respect for that celebrity after reading that), but you can get a very good warm slice of pizza here, nothing more nothing less and I made this a regular stop after I get off the L-train at 3rd avenue. Unfortunately, I stopped coming here after my last visit, when I handed the cashier a $10 bill and he handed me back change for $5. I then had to wait for 5 minutes for them to check the "security cameras" to determine if I would receive the proper change or be swindled. Fortunately the mysterious "security camera" seemed to rule in my favor, but I wonder what would have happened if it had gone the other way. So far, I've managed to avoid being scammed in NYC so this would be a new one. I now get off one stop earlier on the L train and go a little way down 1st avenue for pizza that's just as good and slightly cheaper. Hopefully if the cashier here makes a mistake with my change (assuming it's a mistake) I won't be treated like a common thief while security cameras determine if I'm lying or...
Read moreThe pizza was not as great as the nostalgia. Joe’s has been famous for decades, unfortunately the reality is “famous” is not always “the best”. If you’re looking for a good slice of pizza, simply to have that classic “grab a slice in New York” experience, Joe’s is great. They have good pizza, good ingredients, good prices, and great service. If you’re on a mission to find “the best pizza in New York”, then this is probably not the place. My main complaint is that their sauce is just completely bland. In Italy, “Marinara” is known as the mother of all tomato sauces. It’s traditionally kept very simple, to keep it versatile for different recipes. Tomatoes, Olive Oil, Salt, and a little garlic. That’s basically what the sauce is at Joe’s. Italians will use the Marinara to then make a gravy(AKA spaghetti sauce in America) for pasta or a pizza sauce. This will include spices, herbs, and will develop the flavor and texture to the families desired preferences. In my opinion, New York pizza isn’t the best pizza to start with. Typically pretty bland, and not much flavor. There are better pizza places in New Jersey, where the dough is fresh, and the sauce is full of flavor. All in all, what are you looking for? A nostalgic experience in a trendy restaurant? Or THE BEST...
Read moreI recently had a disappointing experience at Joe’s Pizza on 3rd Ave near Union Square on Wednesday night around 10:40 ish PM. The employee taking orders was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful.
When I ordered my slices, I clearly asked for one white slice and one regular cheese. My friend ordered right after me and got two regular cheese slices. After paying for our drinks, four slices in total, and leaving a generous tip, we were only given one white and two regular slices.
When I politely mentioned that I had ordered one white and one regular, the employee became visibly upset and responded with an inappropriate and unprofessional tone in front of my friend and other customers. It was an uncomfortable and humiliating moment. Worse, when he finally gave me the correct slice, he tossed it at me in an unwilling and disrespectful manner—as if he were throwing food to an animal.
I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience left me truly disappointed. As paying customers, we should be treated with basic respect, especially when we are courteous and generous in return. I hope management takes this into account and ensures that all customers receive the service...
