Replying to @aliannna0 📍 St. Marks Hotel - This is my cheap hotel option in NYC if you are trying to travel to New York on a budget! Affordable hotels in the city are not easy to come by, and this is by far my favorite. There is a lot of history around this hotel too that you can check out! There are so many restaurants, bars, and good food close by and plenty of things to do. This really is for a budget traveler though, so keep your expectations reasonable! As someone who grew up going to St. Marks Place and absolutely loving it, this affordable hotel option has my heart. #nyctravel #travelnyc #nyconabudget #cheaphotel #explorenyc #travelguide #stmarksplace #thingstodoinnyc

I should’ve listened to the reviews. I decided to over look the bad reviews as the complaints were minor and I wasn’t planning on staying in and just sleeping. On arrival my check-in was smooth, be aware that it’s CASH ONLY. The staff working the front desk on arrival was very kind and helpful with getting my bags to my room. My room was unfortunately on the 3rd level of hotel, be aware again that they DONT have an elevator. So I had to climb what felt like 6 flights of narrow stairs. Once inside my room, I noticed that it was quite outdated, but clean. I left my things without giving it another thought and went on my day long expedition of the city. When I returned I decided to shower. To my misfortune the shower handle fell off and I was unable to shower. Again, I didn’t make a big deal and decided to just head to bed and let the front desk attendant know the next morning. Let me just say that was the worst night of sleep that I have ever had. The mattress was super uncomfortable, offering absolutely no back relief from the long day. I woke up feeling sore all over. The pillows weren’t any better. They appeared to have been old lumpy pillows. I’m assuming they were the cheapest pillows they could buy and had washed them to get them to that state. Laying down I finally got a look at the ceiling as saw what appeared to be a leak starting or patched over leak. During the night I could hear everything happening around me, especially people going down the stairs with their suitcases. The next morning, I decided for my sanity that I wouldn’t stay another night fretting it would be a nightmare like the night before. The front desk attendant working that morning was absolutely of no help and didn’t even offer a partial refund considering I had only spent one night of my four night stay. They simply offered me a different room on the second level. I refused and decided to just cut my losses and book the next available hotel room in the area. The only pro that this hotel had was the price and location.

Cash only. Seems like this place is hit or miss. We had a decent stay. The water is temperamental but works. Rooms are cold during winter but have space heater. No parking. Staff was very nice about holding our luggage before and after checking in. But beds were VERY uncomfortable after a few days :( shower head was (inner city) strong enough.

I do not recommend staying at St. Mark's Hotel. First red flag when I arrived: no smoke detector in the room. I immediately alerted the staff to this alarming lack of fire safety - and it took 3 days and several follow-ups for a properly functioning smoke detector to be installed. At one point, a staff member put an old one on the ceiling that only had 2 out of 3 batteries in it - and of course wasn't working properly, contrary to his assurance that it was working "totally fine". It felt like I was being treated as dumb. On top of this, my request for a discount for the last night of my stay due to this substandard service was flat-out refused - the employee said that "we never give any discounts, even when there are complaints". I would have left early and switched accomodations if it hadn't been for a busy schedule and the fact that the conference I was attending was in walking distance.||Other things weren't great either: no fan or window in the bathroom, constant noise of running water from somewhere inside the walls in the bathroom, cigarette burns in the duvet cover, a window that could not be opened properly (it was a guillotine window where the panel did not click into place when pushed up), and payment is cash only (very inconvenient). ||At US$150 (incl tax) a night for a room with a queen bed, St Mark's is relatively affordable for Manhattan. However, I have stayed at much cheaper hostels with dormitories in the past that were in better condition and had better service than this place. Next time I want a private room in Manhattan I'd rather pay a bit more. ||St. Mark's Hotel gets one point for location (very central near Astor Place metro, NYU campus, Washington Square Park) and one point for the room+bathroom...
