Edit: Honestly, pretty shocked by the new quality of service. Used to be a regular — as in walking an hour during the summer, but just had a bizarre interaction. A pretty rude woman in a beanie saw me spill my double espresso ($5) truly minutes after purchasing it. Minutes. I spilled it on the communal table, was immediately apologetic and asked for paper towels to clean it. After she quickly swiped the table w a rag, (I finished cleaning it bc there was still a mess and I inconvenienced them) I asked if she could make another and she said “…Only if you pay.”
For those uninitiated a double espresso on an automatic (or even manual) espresso bar requires a simple click of a button to pour out and a few moments to get fresh crema. It is quite simply the easiest order and quickest drink to make — if a pour counts as that. 😭 Truly, cannot emphasize how much of a godsend getting a double espresso order was as a barista. At that point, it’s just disrespect, laziness, and nickel and diming.
I know call me crazy, it’s not storebought pesto, but so distasteful to wantonly expect a customer to spend $10 over what prob amts to pennies in coffee beans on a customer who just dropped their cup. Wound up going to Starbucks as I’d rather spend money on a nearby place then pay double at a place w such odd store policy. Would love to support a local business (and esp one that supports Palestine) but also live within means in NYC, a place teeming w viable alternatives. ————- I first rated this place 3 years ago, but never wrote a review. The time has finally come though considering that I'm a regular patron. First off, this is one of the few late night cafes -- they stay open until 9 pm! Secondly, it's a super spacious no frills environment with prompt service and outlets a plenty, indoor and outdoor seating. Frequently come here to post up when I need to crank out some work late nights.
Also wonderful egg and avocado sandwich, would prob consume this everyday if I had enough discretionary...

I really love this coffee shop, as it is a warm and welcoming environment. But I was disheartened to see how much single use plastic was being used by patrons who were enjoying their meal at the shop, for here.
By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Plastics are made from fossil fuels, and leach chemicals into humans, wildlife, and our ecosystems alike. Each one and the same.
Brooklyn is a waterfront city, and it is a shame that so many local establishments contribute to its local plastic pollution crisis, not to mention the global crisis at large.
I think it is wonderful that you indeed have real mugs that you offer, signage by the bins, and even compostable cutlery. But it seems like over half of your patrons, have no idea that they can order their meal to stay. And of course, just because utensils are compostable doesn’t mean they get composted, especially when there is no actual Compost receptacle. Off to the landfill!
Perhaps your barista’s could ask more explicitly, if customers will be enjoying their meal to stay. They could even say, would you like your coffee and a reusable mug to stay. You could even feature customers on social media who are enjoying their meal more sustainably..
Unfortunately, we are not going to see much on the policy front regarding the mitigation of plastic use and consumption. So it is up to our local vendors to help patrons do better by this planet.
Thank you for your consideration to put up more signage or ask your customers more explicitly...
Read moreCame in this morning with my partner to grab some coffee. I come to this cafe for coffee all the time on my way to work & tell people frequently that they have the best latte in the neighborhood.
My partner thought he ordered a latte, but must’ve accidentally said coffee. When I see him go up to politely say something to the guy at the register to switch it out, he rudely remarks how he ordered coffee (looking at my partner like he is stupid for being confused) & didn’t offer to instead get him what he intended to order. Even if it meant charging us the difference. There’s a way to go about honest miscommunications & that’s not it.
Both of us are in the service industry & it is so utterly disappointing to see employees interact with guests like that, let alone be on the receiving end of it. What’s the price difference between a drip coffee & a latte? A couple of dollars? We would’ve gladly paid the price adjustment to have what we wanted.
Working with guests to give them a happy experience can sometimes be a matter of having a sliver of empathy. Had to give two stars because not even the best latte can save underwhelming customer service. Now both of us are hesitant about coming back and definitely regret leaving the...
