The place is very cozy and from the outside everything looks delicious, sadly the quality is disappointing. Tiramisu is supposed to be moist, lady fingers should be soaked in coffee liquor - I’d never seen a tiramisu so pale and dry. It was just a compact cake with massive layers of mascarpone. Their decaf cappuccino was watered down - I know it’s decaf but it can still have a strong coffee taste and a good foam. My ice oat latte was probably the only thing I enjoyed because even their bread is a major let down. They advertise a good selection of baked goods but I’m not sure how they call that sourdough or artisanal. A sourdough boule is supposed to have that nice brown color, rustic crust, its interior should be porous, tangy and chewy. What I got was a tasteless, long, white loaf of bread. It literally looks like a roll from the deli. I’m sad that I didn’t look at what was in the bag before I left. I saw the great reviews and wanted to try with my mom while we were in the neighborhood but as I’m eating my “sourdough” for breakfast this am, I feel like I got jipped. Their baklava and assortment of smaller treats are very good but I spent $40 here and can’t really say it...
Read moreI was one of those people that was saddened by the closing of Yaya’s Bakery in Astoria a few months ago. So when I heard that that the same owner/baker has opened a new bakery, I made sure to go and support them on their first day of business.
This new spot is much cozier and brighter. And the pastries all looked amazing. I ended up getting a half pount of Amygdalota ($12.50) and a slice of Nutella Baklava ($4.75)
The owner was so incredibly kind and welcoming. She threw in a few pastries in my bag for free! She said that they were nearing closing time so she wanted to give some on the house for me to try. How kind is that?! When I got home I saw she gave me two muffins (chocolate and berry), a sesame bread and chocolate croissant. I can’t wait to eat these!
The Amygdalota (Greek sytle almond cookies) were delicious. They were so light, soft and chewy but with a crunchy exterior. The Baklava was rich and sweet. I don’t usually lean toward overly sweet pastries but I liked this one. The flaky phyllo doug and chopped nuts went well with the sweet filling.
Malu is a welcome addition to this neighborhood. I hope more people...
Read moreThis artisan bakery is a true haven for anyone who appreciates fine desserts. As a chef myself, I always enjoy discovering places that pour genuine artistry into their work, and this spot does exactly that. When I visited, my good friend Chef Lolli mentioned that their Dubai Chocolate Cake is the bakery’s best seller. Unfortunately, I had already ordered the Black Forest Chocolate Cake, but it was absolutely delightful—moist, decadent, and beautifully balanced in flavor. That said, I’m already looking forward to my next visit so I can finally try the famous Dubai Chocolate Cake for myself. The craftsmanship here is evident in every bite, from the cakes to their pastries, which showcase not only skill but also a true passion for baking. This isn’t just a bakery—it’s a place that celebrates flavor, technique, and heart. I can’t wait to return and explore even more of their creations. They also have a great variety of drinks to pair with their baked goods. Friendly staff and a wonderful...
