Initial encounter: My family and I went out for a late lunch, my wife, my 2yo daughter and my 10month old son. As soon as we walked, the two guys who worked there only look at us, holding the door and the stroller with kids. Then we told them that we had a reservation, and escorted to our table with so much in a rush, the place wasnt even half full. If I remember correctly, it only had 4 tables with 2 people each that were seated. Despite the reservation we made to let them know in advance that we needed 2 high chairs, it wasn't ready and had to wait about extra 10minutes for it.
Appetizer: We ordered 1 order of calamari, 2 orders of spring rolls, and 1 order of marinated chicken on a stick. They were all so good in terms of taste to our liking, the prices were a bit high for a vietnamese restaurant, but I could say it was worth the try.
Main dish: We got 1 order of pho, 1 order of salt and pepper shrimps, and 1 order of grilled pork chop. Again, everything was good! It was expensive for the proportion they are serving compared to other 5-star reviews Vietnamese restaurants we visited.
Bathroom: It was okay, with motion detect red light as their main light, seems odd for me to have the bathroom light color red. Make me feel that the light is trying to hide something that the red light can hide. No designated changing station for babies, soap was available for handwashing.
Service: This is actually the main part of the review, despite of the good food they had. The service was horrible, everytime we ask for something like a spoon and fork for my daughter, or ordering additional things, they always try to not let me finish what Im asking or saying and tries to walk away with haste, and again its not busy. By the time we were eating and everything it was down to 4 tables left including us. They served the food quick though, that I applaud. Also, when we were about to leave, we were told to leave on the other entrance/exit door, as so we did, we were kind fo struggling to open the door with our hands full of the stroller, to go food, bags, and kids. One of the guys was just standing there looking, not helping even with minimal effort, until we were half way out of the door that leads to a few steps up the staircase, the guys held the door for us and saw us struggling with the stroller, I picked up the strolled with my son in it whole holding my daughter in the other hand, then the stroller detached to its pieces causing the stroller and the baby separate, my wife was holding the stroller on the other side with the togo food, with a cup of hot water. The guy who held the door just looked at us struggling, and closed the door like he didn't even care. That's what struck me, for an Asian restaurant and everything, the service was horrible.
Conclusion: Im not expecting for help all the time from these guys working. However, we were struggling that almost caused an accident that a minimal assistance might have prevented it, the hospitability and compassion weren't there, for my family and I. It was a big turn off, even though their food was good.
PS: I still tipped 20% as I feel accustomed to in NYC. But never seen any remorse or feeling of wanting to serve us...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCelebrating our engagement week at Mekong BK was an absolute culinary delight! Amidst the backdrop of Fort Greene's upscale dining scene, this unassuming gem stole the show for me. Unlike the glitz of Michelin-starred establishments we also visited that week, Mekong BK's charm lies in its dedication to real, flavorful experiences rather than fancy interiors. As a gourmet and someone passionate about food and cooking, I was genuinely impressed by the consistently high quality and freshness of the dishes.
From the crisp calamari au beurre, artfully presented over fresh lettuce with a savory lemon pepper sauce, to the tender fillet mignon accompanied by crisp watercress and a special sauce, each bite was a testament to the authenticity and passion behind the menu. The beef tartare, infused with ginger, added a delightful twist that appealed to my taste buds. In the midst of celebrating such a special occasion, Mekong BK provided an unforgettable culinary experience that outshone even the Michelin-starred venues we explored during our engagement week. And let's not forget the Vietnamese coffee ā a perfect ending to a week filled with extraordinary flavors. Mekong BK has undoubtedly become a treasured memory in our...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWas looking forward to dining here for lunch (they open at 1pm on Sundays). We got there at 1pm and it appeared not to be open. After waiting with other customers for about 10mins, they finally opened the door (just unlocked, they didn't open it for us). No greeting, just bluntly asked 'How Many'. We told the manager 4 people, but he refused to allow our service dog inside.
My service dog is a small, well trained service animal. He is trained to detect seizures before they happen. I explained that he is a service dog and the manager said 'The owner doesnt allow any dog'.
This a violation of federal law under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to not allow a service dog in any public area.
The manager told us we can sit outside, but as it is 1pm on a very sunny summer afternoon - the outside patio is simply too hot for myself, my kids and my service dog. There is no awning, umbrellas or shade.
It was such an uninviting and unaccommodating experience, we decided to dine elsewhere.
It's a shame as I usually don't write these kinds of reviews. Normally we eat Vietnamese food regularly in Brooklyn and live nearby. It's a shame we has this experience. We will...
