I debated writing this review, as I welcome more food options to the neighborhood and want to support an Asian restaurant. I went over hoping for some traditional Vietnamese food, but most options seemed to be fusion or whatever the word is. The reason I would even comment is that they did not take my allergies seriously, thinking that a chili and pepper allergy was just about spice tolerance. I tried to explain it and was dismissed by the staff. I ended up ordering a pork bun (rice noodles) without sauces because I hoped it would be traditional -- grilled pork -- and was assured it did not have peppers. I was served a stewed pork with a warning it had been stewed in bell peppers (how did they not know this?) which again, "aren't spicy." I dont gaf about spice -- I'm South Asian, I have a high tolerance for it to the degree I don't notice it, to my own detriment as I cannot always detect it. It's a gd allergy that can put me out of service for days. The cashier said they would "investigate" and never came back out. I was in a rush and had the noodles around the meat, trying the meat once and giving up. I got extremely sick anyway. It is my fault for not being even stricter, but I think I advocated for myself enough, even speaking to the cook, and I am wholly disappointed in the lack of food safety training AND options at this restaurant. Apparently, none of the sauces were safe, and the food on its own is quite bland, which I can't say is the case for more traditional Vietnamese food. Most people love this place, so I'm writing this with the hope you will re-train your staff on both food safety and politeness and maybe introduce one sauce or some dish that has flavor without...
Read moreThis is like one of those fancy, hip, overpriced restaurants at Greenpoint: average-to-decent food, but oh so bland. Saigon Shack and Lily’s are waaay better. Frankly, I don’t understand why the ratings is so high. Everything I ordered (a salad, banh mi) was expensive and kinda tasteless, lemongrass chicken banh mi was soggy. I also waited a total of what must be 40-50 minutes for this order when there’s hardly any people in the restaurant. In fact, I waited so long that I actually finished eating part of the order and they still didn’t finish making the rest. One of the longest waits I’ve had. Waiters were kinda condescending and uppity, too. What’s also strange is that I got hives all over my face and body after eating this — not sure if it’s because I started developing allergies or there’s something wrong with the food. Jus thought I should put it out there.
However, what really made me give this place a 1 star review was after reading how the owner, Fred, responded to a negative review. Maybe the reviewer shouldn’t be that mean, but I actually agree with mostly of what he’s saying: place gave me strong gentrified vibes, and food was not that great. The way Fred responded, though, was beyond rude and unprofessional. He really launched a tirade against the dude, made it all about Vietnamese pride and Vietnamese diaspora, called the dude “trash”, and said he’s glad the dude received bad service. Yo.. not everything is about your liberal sensibilities. Average food is average food, got nothing to do with disrespecting Vietnamese culture, and in the end it’s just a matter of different tastes. Extremely disappointed in how the restaurant...
Read moreThis is not legit. Another gentrified version of authentic cuisine. How could you say this is Vietnamese food? The positive reviews are thanks to newcomers in the neighborhood with no taste.
I got a bánh xèo which I absolutely love elsewhere. I’ve had good and bad versions of this but at least it was always crispy and had actual ingredients, this one was the worst I’ve ever had, like a soggy egg with bacon bits inside. Yuck! The lettuce/mint/cilantro it came with was spoiled, gooey, wilted, turned to mush. How could you serve spoiled food? The sauce it came with was an absolute sin! How can you not make a simple nuoc cham dipping sauce? This was a sriracha mixed with water, absolutely disgusting! Usually it has shrimp and bacon also, not just bacon, which you could just barely tell was in there.
Another inauthentic restaurant with 5 star reviews that doesn’t deserve it. I got my money back. Oh yeah, they filled my coffee up halfway, couldn’t even bother to fully fill it! An abomination! Please get a person in there who really knows Vietnamese cooking because you people are an insult to the cuisine!
Edit: There was another bad review on here from 5 years ago where someone asked for the Buddha statue to be taken out of the bathroom out of respect for the Buddhist faith and the owner refused. Wish I had read that before trying this place. Completely disrespectful, just like the way they...
