Norma's is a cute, quintessential little piece of New Ridgewood, so to speak, and is easily one of the better coffee shops in the neighborhood.
The cozy red hummingbird-stamped awning is very much representative of the shop's ambience. Inside, the tables, layout, and decor fit seamlessly in with the neighborhood and, combined with the personable nature of the service, convey a down-home feel. It's a nice place to sit and work or relax for a couple of hours, if you can find a spot.
The breakfast sandwiches are fantastic - my favorite being the Ultimate Ranchero - and, for the carnivorous among us, the spicy bacon is a must-add to any sandwich that doesn't already have it. The constantly-rotating seasonal sweets selection is dangerously irresistible. Seriously. Every time you grab a coffee you'll be taking home something for later with you. Dieters be warned.
Downsides! Can be a bit pricey, both in general but especially if you can't maintain your self-control around their goodies. Also, I wish there was a way they could fit more seating in. The tables tend to stay full (or occasionally annoyingly being taken up by one person at a two-person table). Outdoor tables are hit or miss depending on the day and traffic.
Generally, if you're in the neighborhood and craving some breakfast, baked goods, or coffee to go, there's no reason not to check...

Read moreWe used to frequent this spot when my girlfriend lived just a couple of blocks away. It was our go-to breakfast place, one that didn’t leave you feeling guilty after eating.
Since we were back in the neighborhood, we decided to drop by. It's been a few years, and there were a lot of new faces. All the outdoor seating was taken, but they bring your order to you when it’s ready, so no big deal. We ordered three breakfast sandwiches and an iced latte.
After ordering, I noticed a sign by the cashier mentioning they have a small kitchen and orders might take a while when it’s busy. I didn’t think much of it since we were the only ones ordering at the time. But then it did get busy, and it ended up taking 45 minutes to nearly an hour to get our three sandwiches—which I thought was wild! I’ve seen smaller spots push out orders faster than this place.
I don’t mind waiting if the food’s worth it, but it wasn’t. There was no seasoning at all—salt and pepper seemed nonexistent. The eggs looked like they’d been microwaved. For the price they’re charging, I expected more, especially after that long wait. Honestly, we should’ve just gone to the bodega...
