Best Indian cuisine in town. Very famous and popular in the neighborhood.
Vegetable samosa is simply perfect. In other restaurants I never order it. I thought I did not like it until I tasted the one they make. Must try.
Yellow lentil soup is mild and plentiful.
My all time favorite is Shrimp Vindaloo. Best killingly spicy dish. There is also a lamb and a chicken version of it. Last time I had the lamb, but all of them are great.
Usually I am afraid of ordering any lamb because most of the time I feel a peculiar side taste of the meet. In this restaurant lamb is mild without any of this peculiar strong taste I feel at other places sometimes.
Finishing any vindaloo dish is a great challenge. This is the most hot dish you can ever have. But for some reason besides the hotness you discover plenty of other joyful tastes. Our waiter offered yogurt to help to win the struggle against the lamb vindaloo. This was a good idea, I recommend it for everyone. If you are a beginner with really hot, spicy food, stay away. If you are fond of hot dishes vindaloo is a must have.
I had rice pudding for dessert. If you win the fight against any vindaloo dish dessert is not that important really but this is a good light thing to finish with.
Always ask your waiter and follow his recommendations.
All dishes are very tasty and enjoyable. Vindaloo is only for the pros. But for them they are a must have.
Other members of my family did like the fennel chicken and the chicken biryani. Those dishes there are not indicated by one or two pieces of red paprikas, are coming mild. They say medium spicy but for me they are not hot at all. May be spicy but not hot. So if you would like something hot, not very hot just to feel it really moderately, you have to ask for it.
So please do not afraid, if you are not fond of really hot as spicy food, the rest of the dishes are mild but with various enjoyable tastes.
I would recommend to order naahm bread on the side. Sorry if I spelled it wrong…
Service is good. You are always well taken care of.
Try it, believe me you...
Read moreI went to Seva today for the first time. I ordered the prix fixe dinner combo with the butternut squash soup, lamb rogan josh, garlic naan ($2 upcharge), and kheer. I also did an a la carte order of samosas. Total dinner price $28.
EVERYTHING was absolutely amazing and delicious and of wonderful quality and portion size. The samosas were MASSIVE. I'm a 230 pound fat guy whose primary enjoyment in life is eating good food. I judge restaurants harshly for portion sizes that skinny people might consider to be reasonable. Seva exceeded even my expectations. They had perfect crispiness, an amazing spice blend, and the tamarind chutney was glorious. (Not so much a fan of the mint chutney, but alas).
The garlic naan appeared to be regular naan with a couple of spoonfuls of minced garlic baked into it. Nothing special there, but still very good.
The butternut squash soup came out piping hot and extremely fresh, and as time went on and the temperature cooled, you could pick up additional flavors and nuances, similar to how good whisky changes in your glass over time as it gets exposed to air.
The lamb rogan josh was chock full of lamb chunks, so no skimping on portions here. The spiciness was perfect for me (I asked for "medium spicy" and they hit my thresholds almost exactly). The curry was full of myriad spices and flavor (could use more cumin though), and it tasted quite fresh and of quite high quality.
And kheer is kheer -- hard to mess this up unless you undercook the rice, and Seva did not undercook the rice.
Additionally, their service style appears to be such where multiple servers take care of all the tables at once (or, at least, this is true for water refills), and my water cups were never empty and I was very well taken care of in general in terms of service.
I love Indian food very much and when people tell you Seva is the best Indian restaurant in Astoria, they're not lying. I'm a believer now. I...
Read moreA good service on the first place, almost all Seva's employees are attentive from the first time you step in. If they are packed, they will write you down and put on the waiting list (max 15-20min.) and you can check your status via Yelp app. So I highly recommend reservation before you go there, if you want to avoid waiting. The menu is quite moderate but you'lle be able to find a good selection of Indian traditional and authentic dishes. Don't visit this place if you don't prefer a little bit heavier food, enriched with a dazzling array of oriental spices and condiments. Nutty, earthy, and rich flavors go w/o saying. My recommendarion are their Sample Platter (it's for two, be advised), Nan (traditional wheat flat bread) and some of the curries (veggie, chicken or lamb), served with perfectly cooked basmati rice. Seva doesn't prepare beef meat, guys, and don't ask for it. The reason is obvious for Indian culture and tradition: cows are holy animals back in India. The portions are enormous, so keep that in mind. Otherwise, you will get a lot food for take away. Seva has an average prices and it's on a good location in Astoria (5min. from N/W station on 30th Avenue), despite the fact it's not a huge venue at all (total occupation is around 30 people at one time). Their kitchen is dowstairs, including the toilet (I suppose). And they do a lot of deliveries as I've see (GRUBHUB, UBER EATS, SEAMLESS). In addition, they serve genuine Indian lager beer - premium TAJ MAHAL (yellow label, lighter, bottled and brewed in India) and 1947 (red label, under license bottled and brewed in PA). Another thing that I've noticed: they are extremely well organized, considering the fact they work in a very small space. All FOH staff (manager, servers, bussers, runners, delivery boys) work in the restaurant which can be compared with a small studio, I'm not kidding! Update: due to obvious inflation, they raised their price,...
