Sun Hong Wong — Restaurant in New York

I have attempted to come here a few times this year but, was always a little too late on my arrival. By around 1 pm the place is a mad house for lunch. Usually filled with older patrons, taking part in their ridiculously well priced and delicious lunch special. For 9 dollars, you can order a whole host of items that normally appear to be more than twice the cost.

I arrived around 11:15 and was one of the first to arrive for lunch. i was seated at a large circular table and given a pot of tea.

I ordered two items off the lunch special. the first being braised tofu and fish, the second being pork belly with long hot peppers. They both arrived steaming hot. My first impression had me shocked. Not only was this a huge portion of fish and tofu but it was perfectly cooked. you could tell the fish was made to order. the fish had a nice crispy exterior and had soaked in some of the delicious brown braising sauce. the tofu, the same.

The pork belly with hot peppers while not as bountiful, or complicated a dish was excerpt what i ordered. i assumed at first it was going to be a twice cooked pork, it was a pretty straight forward stir fry with sweet onions and peppers. Quality of everything was really nice.

Free bowl of rice and a free pot of tea, what a deal.

Friendly staff, great experience, i will be back after watching several other dishes come out of the kitchen. i would definitely get the braised tofu again and either try their bbq items, or this garlic chicken i saw come out, or their steamed whole dish for 12 bucks, or like 30 other menu items.

Usually busy during lunch time. The food is generally well prepared and inexpensive. Lunch menu is full of selections and cheap. Their service folks usually speaks toisan and cantonese. Just had a dinner meal, the duck was very tasty, fried shrimp with salted duck egg was a real treat.fried spring chicken, lobster and steamed carp were all good. The young chow fried rice, Yee mein and the red bean soup we're tasteless and a disappointment after all the all the excellent dishes that precede them. Their lunch menu was priced from $5.00 to $6.00. it included an entree, a pint container of white rice and a cup of house soup, all dishes are separate and not slopped together like their regular rice dishes. The steamed pork cake with seasoned cabbage was real good , but had to wait for 20 minutes. The pork was hand chopped and not grinded, you can order the dish with salted fish and other pickled vegetables. This dish was rated a 4.6 by my dad, and that says alot. The special lunch menu was posted in front of the counter. The meal was very worthwhile for the price and quality. The lunch menu selection for steak with vegetables or steak with onions, both of them over rice consist of 4 medellion size beef slices over white rice cost only $6.00. you can't go wrong. Just had the beef chow hor fun (dry pan fried style) for lunch. My dad and I agreed that the dish is better here than great New York noodle town. Food is very mediocre. The shrimp in the walnut shrimp dish were very small. Restaurant is on the smaller side and feels especially cramped when there are more people. Customer service is very poor. Placed an order for five dishes and paid in person at least two to three hours before the time we told them we would want to pick up. Was okayed by the staff. We arrived a little later than said pick up time and our order still wasn't ready. We asked them why our order wasn't ready yet. First they said oh the order was skipped over, no apologies. Then they later said they were working on it and was cooking the order. Asked them why it was cooking now when we placed this order way in advance? How much longer is it going to take? They couldn't answer and just kept saying it's being worked on or just ignored us when we asked several times. There was no sense of urgency and not much care with following up on our order. I could see it was a busy weekend night for them but again we placed our order way in advance with a specific pick-up time that they agreed to, so there really is no reason why it was not ready as promised.
