The vibe here was not what I expected at this reasonable priced roll and sashimi bar but hear me out - It's not a bad thing.
At 60+ per person, I need to temper my expectations.
Since the motto here is "less talk mote eat" I will get straight into it about the omakase since I avoided the rolls.
First off the music - Fergie/Black Eyed Peas? Interesting choice of music 😅. Then again I have had the most amazing sashimi in the basement levels of Kyoto Station in Japan, so who am I to judge? It's a ... Vibe? 😆
We ordered beer - two Sapporos and after a long day's work, having it barely cold was not the vibe. We drank it anyways but still ... A cold mug instead of just the can would have been nice. Ah well. Consequences. I regret not asking so that's on me!
The Food (CIRCA 12-2023)
Fluke/Flounder - smooth, not bad but nothing that wowed me.
Scallop - nice.
Arctic Trout - interesting but for some reason I expected this to be the more salty of the bunch.
Squid - not too chewy, and not my favorite. It was a bland love affair. I wanted to love it but we just couldn't commit to one another in the end. So no.
Sea bream - toasty! I wanted more sauce on here but I wouldn't dare ask.
Salmon - flavor!! Okay making this like an Everything thing Bagel with flakes of salt on it - this is the wow piece of the course. They should keep this no matter how much the menu changes seasonally.
Yellowtail - truffle salt!! Also good but the salmon is still king IMO.
Uni + Wagyu + Truffle - This did not melt in my mouth the way I thought it would but it was still great! It's not Kobe but it was good. I wanted it to be better than salmon hence why it was the only piece I took a video of.
Sweet Shrimp - ok, it beats out the squid in my mind, but not by much.
Fish Eggs - juicy! Fresh.
Eel - not bad.
The thing about omakase in NY is that it will never live up my ridiculous standards. I'm a spoiled brat when it comes to Sashimi,...
Read moreMy friends and I had an amazing time at the W10 Sushi on Jones!!! The experience of sitting at the Omakase counter with the chefs and enjoying every delectable bite as it is prepared right in front of your eyes makes for an unforgettable experience. The chefs are so talented being as busy as they get and still being able to slice the fish and make everything for you the moment it’s ordered. This is what makes their sushi so delicious aside from their premium fish selection. We had such an amazing time but there was only one issue with our server, probably a miscommunication or at least I’d hope it is. I was there as part of a large groups for a girls night birthday celebration and our server failed to let us know that the tip was included which is perfectly fine but since we didn’t know my friend who used her card to pay added 20% tip on it and the server looked at the check, thanked her and disappeared. A few minutes after the General Manager came and she advised that the tip is already included and asked if we were aware, we said no and she was extremely apologetic, stated the server should have made us aware of it and immediately refunded it. She gave us her card and all receipts showing the proper sum and all I can say is that on top of such an amazing meal and experience knowing that the person in charge is so professional and ethical was the cherry on top. My friends and I were so grateful for the honesty and would go back anytime!! In a city with a million restaurants this is a gem and I loved it, just hope to never have the same server again. She thought a double tip was ok when she disappeared after taking our orders, the only people checking on us was the manager and a male server who was great! Not going to let one bad seed ruin the night. Thank you to everyone there for a meal that blew my mind and for showing us a...
Read moreIf you see pre-pandemic reviews of Sushi On Jones, I would recommend ignoring them. It was once truly a good value for great sushi. No more.
Pretty much everything is lacking now. It was never the place to focus heavily on atmosphere (in and out in 45 minutes makes that hard), but they had been able to fit a satisfying omakase experience in that time. More recently, my meal lasted 15 minutes amidst a rapid fire of nigiri. The staff seemed hurried — bothered by questions on the sake list, unceremoniously plopping pieces on the counter. If there were atmosphere to be found, I don’t know that I would have had time to enjoy it.
The food has certainly declined. The quality of fish is good, but not great. On my last visit, the king salmon was oddly lacking in texture, while the wagyu was stringy and a bit tough. The flavor on the crab piece was positively nauseating. The selection is also pretty rote for an “omakase” — they seem to mean the experience of sitting at the counter instead of a chef’s choice based on what’s in that season or day.
When there’s no atmosphere, questionable quality, and the meal is over in a blink, the prices become hard to justify. Though they truly were good several years ago, they have increased and the quality has decreased. Sure, inflation and labor shortages and other things, but the prices are higher or equal to other sushi places (Sushi Kaito, Sushi Katsuei, Kanoyama, even Blue Ribbon) and the quality is substantially lower. It’s just not worth it.
I miss the old Sushi On Jones. It filled a niche and offered good value for great fish. Today’s Sushi On Jones does nothing...
