Play: 5 Theater: 4

Happen to score a rush tix for a Wednesday night to catch Duke & Roya @ the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre is an off-Broadway playhouse at 121 Christopher Street in the West Village, built in 1926. The theatre is small and intimate with the typical tight seats and minimum leg room.

Nonetheless, I digress. Now for the show...

I honestly did not know what to expect and happy to say I thoroughly enjoyed the performances by the 4 person cast.

If you were a fan of Issa Rae’s “Insecure” then you will be very familiar with the lead actor Jay Ellis in the role of Duke. The play is about romance, with cultural and circumstantial differences. Duke, a hip-hop superstar, meets an Afghan interpreter, at one of his performances at a military base in Kabul. The show was enjoyable and I especially enjoyed the role of Duke’s mother played by Noma Dumezweni.

Overall a great catch if you can make it before the show ends.

Just A Note:

-Show ends August 24th, 2025

-Bar and restrooms located on...

Yesterday, I went to see Gary Gulman's latest show - Grandiloquent (which was fantastic!) at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. It's a small, intimate theater which was perfect for Gary's show. But I digress...the staff at this theater is really fantastic. I wanted to give a special shout out to Michael (the usher on the balcony) and Nafis (who came through for me in a huge way). Props to the woman in the ticket booth too whose name I didn't receive. Really great overall vibe in this theater. If you get there early, walk a few blocks west and take a nice stroll along the...

Came here for the “Duke&Roya” off Broadway show. The show was incredible, so highly recommend! 🦋 intimate theater, spacious & comfortable seats 🦋I personally was on the second row in the orchestra and the people in front of me very tall, so I had an obstructive view…it was very disappointing. the viewing angles are not good. You are basically at the mercy of how crowded it is and who is sitting in front of you. getting an aisle seat is best as you probably have the best chance for an unobstructed view 🦋 there’s a bathroom in the main floor and upstairs...

This review is just of the venue (the show I saw here was really good). The seats are comfortable, but the viewing angles are not good. You are basically at the mercy of how crowded it is and who is sitting in front of you. I think getting an aisle seat is best as you probably have the best chance for an unobstructed view. I did like the vibe of the smaller, more intimate room though. The seats pictured are from row D, 109-110.
