The place is super cool and everyone is amazing, the programming and value and neighborhood presence is very thoughtful and they care so much about community. However do not come here if you are chasing a New Mexican breakfast burrito lol. Go to Santa Fe BK in Williamsburg for that, where they actually griddle the tortillas and scramble the eggs perfectly and everything is cooked together so it tastes cohesive, PLUS they are so good at prep with the counter window so you walk up and it’s ready for just $11.
I really wanted to support this biz and I really miss Albuquerque and hatch chilies and everything so obviously I came to Ursula. Damn, the burrito tasted and looked like everything was cooked separately and plainly in giant batches then sat in containers for newly trained food staff to just throw together on a plain tortilla in an assembly line. The eggs in particular tasted unseasoned with no oil or fat, surprisingly like what I imagine container egg purée for school scrambled eggs is like. Also, I preordered and came first thing when they opened in the morning so trust that it could not be an issue of freshness.
Folks, you cannot mimic a good breakfast burrito by just throwing together pre-cooked components. Griddle searing and recooking the batched parts together is how the love and flavor is infused. Go to your neighborhood bodega or Mexican cafe and anyone manning the griddle will show you this.
I can’t speak to the rest of the food but for a neighborhood place it’s super cute and I’m sure a lovely spot to check out with friends! Again, this review is just for the New Mexican...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place, and I’ve given it two tries: once for sopapilla, and once for breakfast burrito. Neither really hit it out of the park. I got the chorizo burrito and my partner got the vegetarian one; both of us were tired of it about a quarter of the way through. There’s just no texture or flavor variation; it would be better with some acidity (a lime?) or some kind of sauce or salsa on the side just to mix it up a little, or a crema to drizzle, and better if the hashbrowns were a little crispier to give some variation to the otherwise smushy texture (or maybe it needs fresh lettuce or a pico?). Their chile sauce inside is delicious (the green sauce especially), and the eggs are perfectly cooked, but overall it’s just lacking something fundamental. Maybe ask if they can give you extra sauce on the side.
The chorizo burrito tastes exactly like the sopapilla, but the sopapilla was even softer; I couldn’t finish it either. I’m really bummed because the owners seem great, the staff are kind, the tea lattes are phenomenal and the baked goods are delicious, but I’d love to see some changes to the menu items. I’d say generally give the food a try, but maybe pull a Beyoncé and bring some hot sauce and a lime...
Read moreFirst and foremost, I want to give grace because I believe that it's not easy scaling a business when it explodes in popularity due to social media. The mistakes made with what I had here may be attributed to that. Now, I did not dine in so I cannot speak to the service but I did get take out on a Sunday around noon so it was rather packed and busy with customers vying for seating.
I ordered the vegetarian egg breakfast burrito and I was incredibly excited for it because it had everything I liked - eggs, hash browns, and green Chile on a flour tortilla. The first bite I took made me do a double take because all that filled my mouth was the overwhelming saltiness. I took a few bites from different areas of the burrito - some were alright and tolerable but others tasted like a salt mine. I stopped eating it and tried some of my partner's chorizo burrito - good until I hit the same oversalted bite. We dissected each part of the burrito and came to the conclusion that the eggs probably had 3x the normal amount of salt on it.
I want to give benefit of the doubt they probably were just overwhelmed with customers and made a mistake with some of their eggs. I want to give them another chance...
