Dojo japanese restaurant — Restaurant in Newport

It makes it difficult to review a restaurant which claims to be Japanese when you are Japanese yourself. Yes, Dojo serves up an abundance of very tasty and freshly-made rolls. Tonight I enjoyed three different rolls. A spicy tuna roll, a tuna roll, and a California roll.

My wife ordered the teriyaki chicken entree which came with a delightfully tasty broth soup, a salad, fried rice, a noodle and vegetable medley all aside a very healthy sized serving of bite-size teriyaki chicken. Of course I had to sample hers alongside my selection of rolls. I would prefer a thicker and tastier teriyaki sauce. The teriyaki sauce was just a little watered down for my palate.

Growing up in a Japanese household, we did not eat fried rice. Traditional sticky rice was always the rice of choice when I was a child and still is for me in my house today. The rice that was served with my wife's entree was not traditional sticky rice. It reminded me more of a cracked grain Asian or Malaysian style rice.

Overall the meal was not bad. I was pleased to be able to wash my meal down with a cold Asahi Japanese style beer.

I'm sure we'll go back but will be a little pickier with our selection. four stars for the Asahi beer, the soup, and the really super fresh and tasty sushi rolls. Minus 1 star for the teriyaki sauce...

They were the rudest people I have ever encountered. My son is 2 1/2 years old and he spilled a couple of drinks and he is a little messy but he is a toddler. The guy owner the Japanese guy or whatever got in my aunts face and my 75 year old grandma and told them my son was too messy and they have never saw a kid act like him and their four kids would never behave that way. This was all over him spilling drinks.. I went in to talk to her and she again told me how well behaved her children were and I told her I was reporting her and she changed her tune. If you own a public business you practice customer service. My child is two years old he doesn’t understand the concept of mannners yet. I am want him to have manners but, a kid will be a kid. Someone should go talk to her about saying this about children.if you have children and they make a mess they will confront you about your child and their manners.i have actually thought about going to someone about it when it concerns children she...

Wow is all I can say. We live in east TN and visit a lot of different sushi and Japanese restaurants. So when we was heading to North Carolina for a date night and got to trying to find a place to eat......Japanese let alone sushi never crossed my mind as a possibility in Newport. Not anything of quality at least. Let me tell you...... this place rivals the best that I've had in Big Cities at the finest and most expensive restaurants. The quality is worth way more than the price....... how long has it been since you've found that. This place is amazing!!!!! If you get there and they are busy for their 8 tables....... WAIT!!! IT'S WORTH IT!!! Price is very reasonable and everything tasted far beyond my expectations. We will be back. And I have left over because as the owner I assume walked by and said I even looked very full. It a great look to have with a box of leftovers to take home...
