The Borscht Belt Delicatessen — Restaurant in Newtown Township

Disappointing. We went on their publicized opening day and again on June 23, 2023. Also disappointing. The first time we waited over half an hour on line and when we got up to the cashier to order, we were told sandwiches would take at least 1 hour.

We purchased Cole slaw, Health Salad, Whitefish salad, Potato latkes, beet salad and cucumber salad.

They were all ok with the Cole slaw tasting the best and the health salad the worst of the bunch. The containers were skimpy and partially filled. It was chintzy.

We decided to give them another try after working out their kinks.

We ordered “The Kellerman” on line. It was described as a Turkey, pastrami and corned beef sandwich with Russian dressing and rye bread.

We had to call when ordering as another online description included Swiss cheese on the sandwich. We didn’t want Swiss on the sandwich.

The picture of their sandwich was nothing like the one we got.

Top 3 takeaways of the Kellerman. The Turkey, pastrami and corned beef were out of proportion in quantity to one another. The Turkey was overpowering and there was about 2 slices of pastrami and 1 1/2 slices of corned beef. The Turkey was very dry and not flavorful.

The rye bread was toasted! What?! Or was it stale?

The side of coleslaw at an extra charge was good. The container was not filled up. It was about 3 forkfuls. The Kellerman came with a pickle.

We really want this deli to work especially since we grew up on corned beef and pastrami and sloppy Joes and enjoyed it immensely, but it falls short of “The (real) Borscht Belt” and all of those terrific plentiful Jewish delicacies and flavors

For dessert we tried the rugelach and rainbow cookies. The chocolate rugelach was the best one while the apricot and raspberry ones tasted artificial and floral like. . They provided chocolate babka samples which were good . The Rainbow cake had no jelly and tasted solely of marzipan.

The owners spent a lot of time on their decor and design and theme selling dr browns sodas, Charles chips, bonomo taffy etc from the borscht belt time and era but imho they need to beef up their sandwiches and truly represent the Jewish deli...

Did I go to the same restaurant everyone else did that wrote these super positive reviews?? The vibe was great. My husband walked in and we REALLY wanted to love this place. We shlepped 35 min into the burbs expecting delicious meats and fish platters on Father’s Day. I can’t say the food was bad…but it wasn’t particularly good. I want to complain about the wait times being extra long and I understand it was a busy holiday...we waited for what felt like forever. Pickles were basic but OK, coleslaw was completely flavorless and cucumber salad was vinegary but fine. My husband got a steamed pastrami, I got a brisket cheesesteak thing and my son got the challah French toast. We also got a biali to share. The pastrami was mush and the basic rye did not hold up well so the sandwich crumbled. He ordered lean pastrami and it was NOT lean. His sandwich was SO not lean that I can’t imagine what a regular pastrami Sandwich would have looked like. Additionally, this was no Carnegie deli; portions were very modest. My brisket was very tasty, caramelized onions were missing but were brought out quickly and I added it to the sandwich…but again, the bread was not right. It needed to be toasted and sturdier to handle hot brisket and melted cheese. It was soggy but also missing a spread or dressing for added flavor. The challah French toast was a quarter of a challah, fried on 1 side. The rest was just a random chunk of challah, probably baked last week. No sweetness, no flavor, room temperature, boring AF. The biali was a joke! Either our waitress or the kitchen forgot it and when it came out, this tiny pathetic bagel topped with onions came out with avocado knife marks, probably from the sandwich before it, was laughable. People were in and out of this place like they were giving food away for free but it was FAR from free. The price did not justify the food. The staff was super kind and friendly, great decor and ambiance so no complaints there. Again, we really wanted to love this place but it was...

I was in the middle of running errands and tried to place an order over the phone for lunch. They let me know they can’t take orders over the phone and that it had to be placed online even after I explained that I didn’t have internet service. They told me I could come in and order it but that it would take 15-20 minutes. Since I was about 15 minutes away- I found a spot with internet and ordered it online. My order was supposed to be ready just minutes after I arrived. But it wasn’t. 3 different staff members had to check on me asking what my order was. The first one told me it was running behind because of the “cold sandwiches” I had ordered but I didn’t order any cold sandwiches I explained. Then- the chef, nick checked on me and I explained I was told I was still waiting on cold sandwiches I never ordered so I felt confused. He said he would find out what was going on. He went back to find someone but never came back to update me! Finally, the first staff member walked by me and said she was wrong- it wasn’t cold sandwiches it was the potato latkes and they were almost done (just a few more minutes). Another 15 minutes went by and a third staff member came out and told me it was the bagels I had ordered and they weren’t ready and it would be another 5 minutes. I decided to wait but it was another 10! First, it was cold sandwiches, then it was potato latkes, then it was the bagels. Anyways, it took an extra 30 minutes from the time my order was supposed to be done. This took up way too much of my time for lunch to go that I placed ahead of time. I don’t mind waiting an hour or more for good food but just be more accurate on your estimated time frame so I don’t have to come and wait that long. Finally, the food was overpriced and not worth what they are charging. I was excited to try this place but left...
