I've been here several times and it is hands down one of the best pizza places in the Chicago area. And it is a Chicago staple (albeit, it's located in Morton Grove).
It's an unassuming place, nestled at the end on an older neighborhood near the road that leads to the newer, more updated parts of town. It's an interesting place and I'm amazed on how the place is still standing. The floors are creaky and it looks there there are additions upon additions with rooms weaving towards the back, and in the back is a little outdoor sitting area which I had no idea existed until this year. I once was seated outside in a little two to three table area and I thought that was their only outdoor area.
Needless to say, all of these things just adds to the ultimate question of how this ramshackle place puts out the #1 rated pizza in all of Chicagoland? They have these iron skillets in which they bake their signature pizzas with the carmelized crust. A small pizza, which is four slices, can easily feed four people, but mostly feeds two and two of those slices aren't totally finished. Sure, you could add on a salad (I often do) or an appetizer (which I generally don't) but you still won't finish two whole pieces of some of the best pizza you'll ever tempt your taste buds with.
Like I said, I have ordered salads and even had the mozzarella sticks which were very good. Every person that visits from out of town (business or personal) wants me to take them for the best pizza in town and then they rattle off the tourist traps that Tripadvisor lists as the "top pizza in Chicago". I bring them here - to this location. The one in Chicago is fine, but does not have the ambiance of the original location; with all its quirks. Does the Chicago location have a cool bar located next to it called the Bringer Inn? Nope. Does it have the look and feel of something cooked out of your grandparent's kitchen? Still, nope.
I had one friend visit and demanded we visit as she had heard me raving about it forever. She insisted on ordering for us and kept me in the dark. She ordered deep dish with pineapple (sacrilegious!) and jalapeno. And it worked. Shush, people! I never ordered it again, but if any place could make this bizarre combo work, it is Pequods!
They are hands down one of my top 5 faves for pizza in the area and should...
Read moreWe have been talking about this place to our kids for a very long time, as the best pizza around. Unfortunately, anytime we are in the vicinity we can never get in because it’s so busy. We got in today and we’re ecstatic, as it was a last minute decision.
We were seated at our 6:30 reservation time and waited 15 minutes before we were acknowledged. We decided we better put in our whole order drinks, appetizer, pizzas and we did. It took another 20 minutes to get our drinks. The pizza took 1 hour 25 minutes to come out. Having worked at a pizza place, I know deep dish takes awhile, but this was extremely long. When the table next to us, who ordered their pizza a while after us got their deep dish pizzas, our 7 and 10 year old were done at that point and we were getting frustrated. Our server kept walking past us without acknowledging us and giving us an update on the pizza time, even though I’m sure she saw the frustration.
As I write this review, it has been 30 minutes (now 8:47 PM) waiting for our server to stop by so we could pay and get a box. Our card has been on the table waiting. I took the kids out to the car and left my wife because the kids were beyond done. We all loved the pizza, but the kids never want to come back. It was sad that we hyped up this place only to be let down by the insanely long wait time and poor service on a Monday night. My wife and I both have been servers, so we understand, when a place is short staffed, but at least acknowledge the customer and let them know things are busy, running behind etc., don’t continue to walk past and avoid eye contact.
The hostess did see our frustration and when she sat another table, so came and checked on us and asked us if needed drinks. Our server never asked us about drinks or anything the whole time we were seated. Very disappointing to say the least after a 2 hour 20...
Read moreThis was our first day in Chicago, we love you do what locals do. We asked and and talked to a few people and the general concern was Pequod's few of them said you need to try their deep dish pizza and their appetizers. We didn't know what to expect, yet from the moment we came in you can feel the "you're with family feeling", we had to wait a little because there were busy yet it didn't disappoint. From the person that helped us at the door, to our waiter, everyone had a big smile and a helpful disposition. Our waiter suggested us a pizza and we went for the 10" deep dish pizza, with four toppings, plus the mixed appetizer. I'm a big guy and I eat a lot, yet with the size of pizza and appetizers was a lot. We finished our appetizers (amazing) and took home half of our pizza. Their servings are big! And we loved it! We got left overs for the next day. The crust on the pizza was to die for, it was flaky, buttery melted in my mouth. The cheese was all over the place, combined with the fresh toppings made a big impression. I recommend this place 100%,. When ever I get back to Chicago I'll visit this place again. There is a kids Menu and a great variety of topping, as well as other dishes. My wife and I really enjoy everything about the place. One thing to keep in mind is parking, there is not much parking available in this area, they are on a residential zone. As long as you get they just be patient and you'll get a parking...
