Used to be one of my favorite Korean restaurants in Chicago region until today, when I was ushered by the least hospitable server. I felt humiliated by the way he treated me and my friend when we were trying to dine in.
We entered the restaurant this noon through the rear entrance and the place was quite packed, so we were walking towards a less busy area in the restaurant with empty tables and with a counter by the main entrance(we were not provided any guidance on where to be seated from the server who popped up late when we had walked almost all the way in to the front door of the restaurant). We were not trying to sit down on any table without guidance from a server of course, and we were just simply walking inside to avoid the crowd dining in a small and stuffy hall. BUT, the male server, who I'd never seen in my previous visits, was telling us in Korean, in a very aggressive and threatening tone and facial expression, that would be translated into something like "why the heck would you walk to the table without my guidance?". I explained to him that we were not trying to sit down without his guidance and were just trying to walk into towards the main entrance area where tables were empty, but he continued to blame my friend who was walking in front of me. Even after explaining to the server repetitively about the situation, the server did not seem happy and was just mumbling something. My friend and I no longer wanted to dine at the restaurant and had to walk out to avoid any further abrasion. As a person who's brought many of my friends over to ToSocChon to introduce K food, I do not think I will be visiting ToSocChon in the future, and I will no longer be recommending this restaurant to ANY...
Read moreI just realized that I have not written a review for my favorite Korean hotpot restaurant, so here it is. If you want to try something authentic and different, you have to try this place out. I found this place a few years ago by chance because I have been looking for good Korean close to work. I only come here during the cold months because this places is known for its hotpots, too hot for the summer months.
Hotpots or casserole are the main theme here, there is no BBQ, no chicken wings, no sushi, just awesome mouth watering hotpots and these folks know how to make them, aside from fresh ingredients, the broth base is very important. I personally don't like over spiced food but the broth here has just the right amount of spice in it but not overwhelming that you can't taste anything else. The flavor combination is just unbelievable, especially the spicy chicken or spicy pork neck bone hotpots. If you want to take a break from the spice you can always order the bulgogi hotpot which is more on the sweet side. There are other hotpot variations with tofu and such. Do try the traditional blood sausage, you can't just get them everywhere.
Together with prompt and friendly services, you can't resist coming here at least once a week. The food just warms you from the inside. This is one of the few places that I will always end up...
