A big serving of discrimination. With a side of racism. Yummy.
Wow. That what I thought when I saw the giant menu hanging from the wall. Seriously, this deli restaurant looks like its made for me. Good prices, hand made sandwiches with fresh cut meats... had all my favorites like pastrami, corned beef, meatballs, and so many goodies. I had a coworker recommended this place. Best sandwiches in town she said.
Here my experience. I was looking at the menu, a big group just ordered, and I stood there for a good two minutes. No one acknowledged my present, at this one rare moment there was no one behind, but a lot of staff behind the counter. All doing their thing. I am standing in the middle, reading the menu, just waiting for someone to talk to me, and as I was just about to ask for help, a family of four walks in, nice lady stood about two foot to my left. A dude name Codi rush to greet the nice lady and proceeded to take her orders. I was dumb founded. What just happened? No hi there, who's next? Just ignore me, not even a glance, or nod... nothing.
Half way thru the ordering, I asked Codi where the line was? It was where the the lady was standing, one foot to my left, he said. But there was no marking of any kind stating where the line starts, and I was here minutes before, standing two foot to my left, where the nice lady was just standing. I slowly drifted to the right as I was hoping to get someone attention. At this point two more people got in line. Codi tells me I need to go to the back of the line. At this point there where about 8 or 9 people in line. Yes. That right there was a rush or stampeded of customers in just minutes... once again, shocked at the number of customers that just appeared, seemingly out of no where. It was truly an amazing thing to watch. Not sure if that was normal, but it happened today, a Saturday in June around 1240pm. Amazing. The stampede of customers and the ten service staff or so behind the counter.
At this point, I realized what I just experienced. Something that happens to me on occasion, discrimination and racism. Disbelief at first, No way... no way... This is Norco. Just a few minutes from... No way.
Did that dude just did the one thing I hate the most, made me feel like a nobody?
The restaurant had a long line, way into the dining room, a testament of how much the locals must love this place. Looking into the crowded room a light bulb moment... No way, it hit me... NORCO. I forgot where I was and who I was. My fun loving nature and interest in finding wonderful eats... I forget who I am.
I understood what happened, it's not my first rodeo ;-).
I forgot who I was to them. Not a person, not worthy of their time. A stranger that crossed the border from down south, more specifically, south Corona.
So, I did what I do, talked to the manager Angelina, took my Asian family and ran for it.
Good bye Sixth Street Deli in the wonderful city Norco, America's most famous horse town. And maybe the best deli sandwiches in town.
Thank you Sixth Street Deli. Thank you Codi and Angelina, for the memories.
Thank you for reminding me where I...
Read moreWe go to the deli from our office, or have them deliver, at least twice a week. In case you haven't ever been here - start at the deli case (look for the line at lunchtime), let them know what you want and whether you are eating in. They will give you a receipt with your number on it. Delivery is convenient but double check your address with them, ours is a mouthful, it can be really loud at lunch while they are trying to get the info. They do their best to get your food out quickly and the delivery fee is far less than other places. My husband likes the Alton off the in-house menu, but we have tried most of their menu and like almost everything. We get their chili, which is our "ate at the deli" dinner, to have with our pasta, tortillas or rice for a quick dinner. It has ground beef and beans, decently spicy, so try it before you give it to kids, or less adventurous eaters. There is a local vibe to the deli as jokes flow with longtime customers, or sometimes newbies😉. It's a place service personnel from the Norco base are still thanked for their service to the country, doors are held open for others and others talk about their horses, or run into old friends. I have seen some negative comments from people about the deli. Maybe you caught them on a bad day, we all have those, some of us even cut others some slack. It's a family run business, not a cookie cutter franchise. Sometimes days just start and end less than the way you planned them, we know that from our own business. Why not grab a sandwich, soak up, and support, the local community, and don't expect Starbucks for sandwiches. I would rather have one of their turkey and provolone in squaw bread sandwiches, than ten from a...
Read moreFirst time that I’d been to this place and overall was a solid 4-star experience. Got there a quarter after 11AM and there was already a crowd starting. About half the dinning room was taken. You place your order at the counter and have a seat, they call your number out and bring you your food (that is if you order in). During the wait, the place got packed! It is a must to call in your order during the 11AM-2PM hours. Counter said it gets like that everyday.
Sandwiches were not bad, they definitely portion out the meat and it is in the medium range, not skimpy but not generous. Reflected the pricing, wasn’t overly priced so it felt right for what they charge.
I had a Pastrami on Rye (make sure you take note that they put cheese on it!) and coworker order the Beef Dip (same thing, make sure you notice cheese is on it) and both were not bad.
Place gets super packed, be ready to wait in line. Call ahead is my advice. It’s worth a try, ill for certain go back when I want a sandwich and...
