Gran Maya Mexican Grill — Restaurant in Norfolk

We’ve been waiting to try the newly reopened Gran Maya until they received their liquor license. It was worth the wait. The margaritas, food, ambiance, and service were excellent. The remodeled decor is upscale with a beautiful woodwork and art, including a Chihuly-inspired glass chandelier. Service was great! Chips and salsa tasted house-made and the Guacamole Fresca was as fresh as the name. I ordered the Enchiladas Blancas with an enchilada trio of chicken, beef, and cheese topped with a delicious cheese sauce. It was beautifully served with very tasty Mexican rice and a garnish of shredded lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. I left with a take away box of leftovers. My family members both ordered the Make Your Own Combo with taco, enchilada, beans and rice. Everything was delicious and well-presented. The house margaritas are great and I’m glad they offer two sizes. The small margarita was just right for me, while my family ordered the large. We topped off the meal with fried ice cream and sopapillas (Mexican donuts) for desert. Everything was delicious! Service was friendly and attentive. We were never rushed and the ambiance is quiet enough for conversation. This might be our favorite Mexican restaurant in Ghent! We’ll definitely be back. In response to the owner- yes I tried this restaurant last year and ordered the same drink and did not like it. However I DID PAY FOR IT! You know I paid for it. I want you to look at your cameras, I asked your bartender is she could make me a skinny margarita and she told me yes. I want you to look at how my drink was made , there was absolutely nothing fresh about it no fresh limes no fresh oranges , she didn’t shake my drink to mix it , everything was wrong. My niece and I had lunch here. We were very surprised that we were the only people dining there today. I can only guess that perhaps the impending bad weather and the frigid cold kept people away today. The chips were fresh & warm and the salsa was very good.
