A Flavorful Eruption That Sometimes Flows Slowly Volcano Sushi and Asian Bistro offers a diverse and appealing menu that delivers on flavor, making it a solid choice for a sushi or hibachi fix in Norfolk. The restaurant boasts a clean, modern atmosphere and a menu varied enough to please a crowd, though some notable inconsistencies in service keep it from reaching its five-star peak. The culinary highlights are certainly the specialty rolls and the hibachi dinners. The namesake Volcano Roll is a must-try, arriving with a beautifully chaotic presentation and a satisfying blend of creamy, savory, and spicy flavors. The sushi is consistently fresh, and the variety of rolls offers something for every palate, from classic to creative. The hibachi entrees are another strong point, with generous portions of well-cooked steak, chicken, or shrimp accompanied by flavorful fried rice and vegetables. It's an excellent value for the quality and quantity of food you receive. However, the dining experience can be a bit of a gamble when it comes to service. While the staff is generally pleasant, the pacing can be frustratingly slow. It's not uncommon to experience significant waits for initial drink orders, appetizers, and the final check, even during seemingly off-peak hours. This sluggishness can detract from the overall enjoyment of an otherwise delicious meal. While the food itself is largely reliable, the kitchen can also have moments of inconsistency, with dishes occasionally not hitting the same high mark from one visit to the next. Ultimately, Volcano Sushi is a great spot if you're craving quality Asian fusion and aren't in a particular hurry. The delicious food and pleasant ambiance make it a worthy destination. With a bit more efficiency and consistency from the front of house, it could easily be one of the top-tier dining experiences in the area. For now, it remains a strong, if slightly flawed, four-star contender. Generous Portions and Bold Flavors with Room for Polish Volcano Sushi and Asian Bistro is a vibrant and reliable hub in Norfolk's dining scene, offering an impressively vast menu that caters to nearly every craving for Asian cuisine. It's a place where you're guaranteed to leave satisfied, thanks to colossal sushi rolls and great value bento boxes. While it consistently delivers on flavor and portion size, minor inconsistencies keep it from achieving a perfect score. The true star of Volcano is its sheer variety and value. The sushi menu is a feast for the eyes, featuring creative and massive signature rolls that are as impressive in size as they are in taste. Rolls like the "Crazy Train" and the tempura-fried "Titanic Roll" are flavor-packed and generously constructed, ensuring you get your money's worth. For those not in the mood for sushi, the bistro menu is equally robust, with commendable Chinese and Thai staples. The dinner bento box is a fantastic deal, offering a heaping combination of an entrée, rice, soup, a California roll, and appetizers that easily provides enough food for two meals. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from a popular, trendy bistro—lively, often busy, with playful lighting. It’s a great spot for a casual dinner with friends or a group outing, and the "All-You-Can-Eat" sushi option is a significant draw for the truly famished. However, the experience can sometimes lack a final layer of polish. While the food is generally fresh and delicious, there can be slight inconsistencies from one visit to the next; a dish that was spectacular last time might be just "good" the next. Service can also be a bit hurried during peak hours, and takeout orders, while convenient, have occasionally been reported with missing items. Ultimately, Volcano Sushi and Asian Bistro is a strong contender and a go-to spot in Norfolk for a reason. It delivers big on flavor, portions, and variety, making it a fantastic value. While there's a slight opportunity for more consistent execution across the board, it's a dependable and deeply satisfying choice that earns a...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars, I would. But I’ll let the nice waiter account for the one star - after all, he didn’t prepare the food. Let me start by saying that we generally steer away from all you can eat restaurants as I don’t think the food is of a great quality. My husband and I decided to give it a shot as this restaurant is closer to home than our favorite sushi restaurants (which are Geisha & Oishi in Chesapeake - both of which I give five stars). When we arrived, we decided to order off the normal menu as we don’t eat more than three rolls combined. We ordered a volcano roll, shrimp tempura roll, and a spicy girl roll. Normally sushi takes a little time to prepare as it is made fresh to order. In this case, our food was delivered to our table within five minutes of ordering. Immediately I was caught off guard by the presentation, the volcano roll was tiny, the spicy girl roll had large amounts of imitation crab salad smooshed on top. The only roll that looked normal/edible was the shrimp tempura roll. We forged ahead and tried each roll. The rolls were very obviously pre-made and the temperature was off. The volcano roll was hard and barely had any meat in it aside from the large dollop of imitation crab salad sitting on top of each bite. The shrimp tempura was chewy and the spicy girl roll, well - it was horrible. I had to spit it out in my napkin and excuse myself to the restroom as I thought I might get sick. The fish was chopped up and low quality. Our waiter did inquire about why we were asking for the check so soon and my husband explained the food was not edible, but he still charged full price. I don’t understand how this restaurant can have so many great reviews because it’s such low quality and the prices reflect something that should be of better quality. I implore you if you are reading this review, don’t make the mistake we did and go elsewhere. I HIGHLY recommend the sushi bar at Geisha and Oishi. (Also side note - the restrooms were filthy and clearly are not cleaned on a daily basis which is another turn off for me, I can only hope their kitchen area is...
Read moreSo this used to be our favorite go to place for sushi and Asian cuisine, the food was always good, the wait time short and the service fairly decent.
Well we ordered sushi to go on the 12th for my 25th birthday and not only was the shrimp tempura roll legitimately all cucumber and two shrimp tails on the end which I could completely over look I know people make mistakes, what ever it happens. But then the tuna and salmon rolls were both not good, the tuna it self had a very weird consistency to it and you could tell it wasn’t the freshest. So I ended up tossing out what was left of the two raw rolls; well I ended up with the worst case of food poisoning in my entire life from the sushi.
I mean like I’ve never been more sick into my entire life, I actually considered going to the ER because I was so unbelievably ill but at the same time I couldn’t move with out being violently sick. My husband had to stay home from work to take care of our 7month because I couldn’t leave the bathroom for 16hours and even after that I’m still not a 100% and I might end up going to the ER later today in all honesty.
My son had a sweet potato roll and he was fine and my husband got his regular bento box and he was also fine but me? Good lord no, I don’t think I’ve ever been so close to death in my life. I mean I did need to loose some of this baby weight but this wasn’t the way i intended to go about it.
I think this will be the last time we order from Volcano unfortunately, it was a good run but this is the only time I’ve ever gotten food poisoning from eating sushi and I’m not willing to take that risk again. I give two stars because we had two really good years before there were any issues, my insides how ever would give 0 stars because I’m not sure they’ll ever recover from that round of...
