âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ After hearing so much about Gwenieâs Pastries, I finally made it overâand Iâm glad I did. I was able to try the ube cheesecake, and let me tell you... it lived up to every bit of the hype. Smooth, rich, and not overly sweet, with that perfect ube flavor that balances earthiness and creaminess. The coconut graham crust? A whole moment by itself.
Big shoutout to Lani, who helped me outâwelcoming, kind, and clearly passionate about the food and culture behind it. Excellent customer service makes a good visit great, and she definitely added that touch.
Gwenieâs is a Filipino family-owned bakery known for putting love and tradition into everything they makeâand you can taste it. From what I saw (and later looked up online), theyâve got everything from ube pies, crinkles, and halo-halo, to Sylvanas, cassava cake, hopĂa, puto, and classic Filipino bread like pan de coco, mamon, and Spanish bread. Itâs a full lineup of Filipino flavorsâbold, nostalgic, and made fresh daily.
Whether you're new to Filipino desserts or grew up with them, Gwenieâs brings a little piece of home or adventure to the table. If youâre in the area, go. If youâve already been... you probably already know.
And againâthank you, Lani, for making my first visit one...
Read moreI recently read about Ube and the various desserts that are based on Ube. I wanted to bake some desserts using Ube but wanted to get a taste for this food item before I went down the cooking rabbit hole. Yelping for "Ube near me" led me to Gwenie's! And Thank the stars for that recommendation!
The store is located in a warehouse location and has no storefront other than a heavy metal door! I thought we were at the wrong place, but I did venture ahead and opened the door. That action revealed a store behind the doors and we went right in!
The display shelves is packed with all kinds of desserts and other items. I was amazed with the variety of items available here. We got a good introduction to all the goodies on sale and ended up purchasing a whole bunch of items! Ube Cheesecake Ube Loaf Ube Cupcake Mango Cupcake Cassave Cake
All the items were epic! And we are instant fans of Ube! Even the non-ube desserts were really awesome!
We have been to Gwenie's many times since our first visit and have even introduced our friends to desserts from this store.
Gwenie's is definitely on our go to list for dessert...
Read moreGwenie's Desserts is a hidden gem. It's located in the industrial part of Rockville, but still pretty close to the pike. It does not look like a restaurant or a store, but more of warehouse so it may be a little difficult to find. Gwenie's Desserts doesn't only sell desserts, but also traditional Filipino home-cooking (Lechon, sisig, etc) on Fridays and Saturdays.
Upon walking in, you will see shelves of baked goods and a refrigerator with cakes and pies. I had the $10 Lechon (crispy, roasted pork belly) combo, which included rice, spring roll, papaya salad, and a drink. The pork was really soft and the skin was nice and crispy. The spring roll was really thin, but good. The combo was a great cheat day meal! I also had a slice of the ube cake. It was delicious! The cake was so light and fluffy and not overly sweet, with a touch of coconut in the cream.
It's a really small place. There is only three tables with about four seats per table....
