Welcome to Helen's JAD (Just Another Dive)! Known for their wings and late night kitchen, Helen's is one of the few late night spots in KC where you can get food at the end of a fun night on the town.
FOOD I had the All-American Burger 🍔. It was quite tasty and I definitely recommend it. My friend had the wings and said they were delicious as well. We didn't try the pizza but that will definitely be my pick if I end up back there.
SERVICE Our food came out quickly and our server seemed cool/nice. They made sure to ask if we wanted another drink as soon as we polished off the last. No complaints there!
ATMOSPHERE Appropriately named (Just Another Dive), the atmosphere at Helen's was that of a generic dive. The music wasn't for me tbh. It was mostly classic rock tunes i hadn't heard in years (and wouldn't have minded keeping it that way) mixed with modern country which just ain't my vibe, but also, it's Kansas City so what do you expect? This definitely isn't like one of the more artsy, hipster, service industry dives in Chez's, Hillsiders, or even Easy Inn but those dives are few and far between in KC anyway. There was lots of sports stuff and generic beer marketing posters everywhere which felt pretty bland. I will say the patio was really nice though and a good patio is always important.
Overall, I'd swing by again for a late night slice of pizza and a quick drink at the end of the night. The food was delicious, drinks were alright, service was good, and people were nice enough, atmosphere wasn't for me really. I'd go back for the food, food service,...
Read moreI've lived in KC for 9 years and had no idea about Helen's until I was referred there by a waiter at a pizza place in the Brookside neighborhood in the city. The Northland has a scarcity of good, non-chain pizza, and he told us to check it out because their pizza is great. He wasn't lying.
"JAD" stands for "just another dive," and it's definitely a dive bar. This place embraces that and takes advantage of it. It's a nondescript building, with a very modest interior. I don't know what this place is like during peak times, as we went at 5:00 on a Sunday - but there was plenty of seating, a great selection of beer, and a friendly atmosphere where regulars are remembered and new guests are welcomed with open arms. In fact, when I told the bartender how we ended up there, she knew the exact waiter at the other pizza place that referred us there (Michael) without me telling her his name. She even knew what he liked to order.
They were running $4 Boulevard draws, which was awesome, and the selection was great. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip and a pizza, and were very pleasantly surprised: the dip was delicious and hot, the chips were served warm and fresh, and the pizza (they only offer thin crust, which was fine) was shockingly good for a bar.
One important note: you order at the bar, so don't expect someone to come to your table to serve you. If you don't mind dives, and want to get away from chain places, absolutely go to Helen's, head to the bar, grab a drink and a pizza, and enjoy quality food at a very...
Read moreFirst off I'd like to say I had never been here before and my first experience was very pleasant. The place was empty which had me questioning if we came to the right place but me and my wife sat down decided maybe the crowd hadn't showed up yet. Ordered two beers and our food up at the counter was promptly served our beers and we grabbed a table. The lady working the bar was very friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu and beer menu. I ordered the north it had mushrooms and olives and olive oil plus a few other toppings and cheese. Let me start off by saying the burger cook was perfect for me just light pink inside nice light char on the outside just a great all-around cook. The french fries that came with it were homemade as well as the hamburger patty and I assumed the ped olives and olive oil dressing. My wife ordered the fish and chips the fish was hand battered there as well not sure if it was fresh fish but the batter job and cook was very fresh it seemed like they battered it right before they cooked it for her. Her fries "chips" were homemade as well. I love the decor and there was plenty of TVs to look at if you're into sports they had the royals game on which was awesome got to see Salvador Perez hit another home run. I will definitely be going back and I will recommend others to go...
