I was genuinely excited to visit Island Flavor Cafe in North Lauderdale for the first time, especially after hearing they had some vegetarian options. When I got to the counter, I told the woman helping me that it was my first time there and that I was strictly vegetarian. I asked if they had something like a veggie patty, and she said yes. So I went ahead and ordered one with a drink.

As I started eating, I was impressed by the flavor and spices until I noticed a meat-like texture that didn’t seem right. After taking a closer look, I realized the patty wasn’t vegetarian at all. It was chicken. I brought it to their attention but none of the employees would provide customer service properly or even think to ask me if i would like a refund. They were just occupied looking at the chicken patty they served me and seemed as if they were trying to throw it in the garbage and get rid of any evidence. After I asked for a refund, she refunded me $3 for the patty. But, the damage was already done.

I haven’t eaten meat in over 15 years, and I was extremely clear about being vegetarian. Of all things to mix up, handing me a chicken patty after I emphasized my dietary restriction is just unacceptable. It may have been an honest mistake. But it left me feeling disappointed, misled and honestly kind of sick.

I have ordered here before and normally I would walk in and place my order, but this particular evening my daughter wanted a wrap and last time she walked in they told her the wraps are made to order and she would have to call to place an order for the wraps. Well I called to place a pick up order and the young lady picked up the call and asked could I hold for one minute. When 10 minutes passed I called on my other line and never got through. I proceeded to head over there after 30 minutes and while was on the line waiting she hung up and so, I called back and the same lady picked up, and I said ma’am you had me on hold over 30 minutes and never picked up the line. She said, she didn’t know that and she don’t know anyone was on hold? I was dumbfounded and she said what you wanna place an order I said yes. When I asked about the wrap she said, they are not making any wraps for the rest of the night. Go figure!! They need to work on their customer service and not sure what she had going on she had me on hold that long. I have been there in the evenings and it’s not that busy to have me on hold for over 30 minutes. No apologies and I am sorry for having you on hold. I tried it for the first time and was impressed with the Fast service; we called in our dinner orders on a Friday and it was ready within 15 mins for pickup.👍 We ordered the 🌶 escovitch snapper with rice and peas and was delicious. I had the oxtail and rice and peas with steam veggies and it was nice and tender, not too much flavor but filling. I would definitely try other dishes in the future one day.

Update 4.30.22 on today's jerk chicken. 😕

We had the so called jerk chicken and I was embarrassed to serve this jerk dish to my family. I suggested us to have Jamaican dinner today over other ethnic food. My family couldn't finish this dish 🥺

Some pieces of the chicken was overcooked , tough, dry and burnt. I literally scraped burnt up skin off a drumstick and ate it since nobody wanted it. The chicken had no hint of grilled taste, its oven cooked and smeared with pepper with no flavor.

I truly hope chef has a better day tomorrow because dis ting today taste like cardboard and scotch bonnet.
