About as perfect as it gets. I stopped by here for an earlyish dinner (5pm) this past Saturday with my mother, a CT native who lives in northern Fairfield County. This was my first time, I think, in this downtown area of Norwalk, which is...an odd area. It looks like they haphazardly gentrified it five minutes ago, and no one knows it yet. I did enjoy the super wide streets and easy parking. Like a true adulting professional, I checked Greer's website beforehand and followed their recommendation to download the ParkMobile app, which is easy enough to use that you can probably just download it when you park somewhere - maybe I saved 15 seconds. But regardless, drama-free. My mother parked in the parking garage next door and reported no issues.
Very pleasant atmosphere inside; airy with a lot of good lighting. I showed up first and was warmly greeted by multiple members of the staff (which I think was a coincidence; one or two extra just happened to be in the area at the time, but a nice touch nonetheless) and led to a table in the garden room by the window and POS system.
Several of the cocktails looked intriguing, but I decided to go with the Rosemary Maple Bourbon Sour. Right choice. Having "sour" in the name can be a risk - I've had sours where that particular taste was just overpowering - but it was an excellent blend. The natural sweetness of the bourbon and the maple inclusion really balanced everything out. I had two of these bad boys, and quite willingly.
I'd intently studied the menu ahead of time and intended to order the crawfish dip, but then saw a crawfish andouille pasta dish on the specials menu and obviously had to pivot last minute. Something tells me I wouldn't have gone wrong either way, but this was delicious. Super flavorful without being overwhelming, and a solid portion that still allowed for some room for dessert. It's a shame the crawfish are small, but that's just the burden of living in the Northeast - high taxes, small crawfish. And arguably, the small crawfish and lighter pasta allowed some room for a scrumptious dessert - I can never pass up maple bacon donuts. A delight, and very obviously made to order. I can't speak for everyone, but two of them was the perfect serving size for me but I imagine people who are less barbaric are satisfied with just one.
The service was magnificent. Our waitress Sarah (sp?) was an absolute delight, stopping by regularly and providing a lot of welcome, personal input regarding various items on the menu. Just very warm and friendly, and that type of hospitality touch makes a difference. Loved her; a huge asset for the restaurant.
I'm rarely in this area but it's nice to know there's an excellent option just off 95 that I can go to in lieu of one of the myriad of rest stops....
Read moreThe Greer Southern Table has a homey, family vibe that lets you relax, let go, and fully enjoy your meal. The wait staff and bartenders are exceptional. They are helpful, friendly, and it feels like they are having a good time and happy to be there. It is so rare to feel this welcome by staff in any restaurant. Chris was our waiter (consider yourself lucky if he is your waiter), and at the end of the meal he remarked that he appreciated us coming by to spend the evening there. It was such a kind sentiment and one that made us feel like we weren’t just visiting a business but spending time amongst friends.
Ok on to the food…it was outstanding. The “redneck edamame” is a must order. The beet brined deliver eggs are to die for and we couldn’t stop eating the highly addictive corn dip (less heavy/creamy than other corn dips in a great way). Even the chips were tasty with spice on each one. The attention to detail is impressive. Their squash, burrata and arugula salad was a medley of flavor that we couldn’t stop eating (sweet, crunchy, salty, creamy, just an awesome juxtaposition of textures and flavors). And then we had to try the famous fried chicken which absolutely deserves ALL the buzz. Crunchy, moist deliciousness! The truffle mac and cheese was so good too, although I waited a bit too long to eat it and I wish I tried it when it was warmer. It is made with ditalini pasta (a welcome change) and topped with ritz crackers which add a really lovely texture and buttery taste to the dish. I happen to like coleslaw and theirs is a great pairing to the chicken, it’s super clean, light, and has a great crunch. The apps and dinner were so filling but we couldn’t go without ordering dessert. The Natchez Mud Mousse looked too good from the next table over to ignore. It was insane. It was one of the best chocolate mousse desserts I have ever had. The super creamy whip with the gorgeous chocolatey mousse, and at the bottom this awesome cookie crumble that adds a new texture and taste…it was pure heaven and a wonderful way to wrap a beautiful meal.
This restaurant was SO good that I am already planning my next visit. I have a feeling their brunch is incredible, and there were wayyyy too many items on the menu that we missed and wanted to order so I will most...
Read moreI’ve been to Greer twice now. First for dinner summer of 2024 and for brunch last week. My partner had celiacs so we need to be careful about cross contamination with gluten. The first time we went was a great experience. The server was knowledgeable and made us confident in his and the kitchen’s understanding of our allergy restrictions and the food was very good. This made the experience we had last weekend much more of a disappointment. We called ahead to ensure that there were safe gluten free options on the brunch menu and had a good idea of what we planned to order as a result but as is our usual practice we still asked our server when he greeted us to verify that we were ordering safely. He unfortunately didn’t have a good understanding of the menu or allergens so he had to check with kitchen staff (again this is proper practice and I’d always prefer they ask to be sure than risk glutening us). He didn’t return to take our food order for over 20 minutes and appeared to forget about us as he tended to other tables. When he finally returned he had forgotten to ask and had to go to the back again. We weren’t in a rush so we would have happily sipped our coffees while we waited but the cappuccino and latte we were served were undrinkable. I don’t know if the espresso machine was malfunctioning or the person who made it wasn’t familiar with it but it was very watery and stale with no foam on my cappuccino. We asked to change them out for regular drip coffee which tasted great so that was the right move. We ordered a starter and entrees and everything dropped at our table at once at varying temperatures. By this point it was starting to get busy but it was still disappointing after such a long wait. We let our server know our frustration and he was apologetic and absolutely made it right but it was a stark decline in experience from our first visit so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was just an off day but I’m not sure we will be back for brunch because the gf options were limited. The pimento cheese...
