In Norwalk and Fairfield County, Vedas sets a high standard for Indian restaurants. Although we had, for many years, focused on lunch buffets when visiting Indian restaurants, we have become increasingly disappointed with the inevitability that most Indian restaurant buffets use left over cuts of meat and other left over items from their previous night's more expensive dinner menu. This is where we got hooked on Vedas: their lunch menu is fresh, cooked with impeccable care and precision, and of a much higher standard.
Vedas' daily lunch special turns out to be a much better deal the buffets for a number of reasons, including: the portions are just right for the middle of the day, the food is as high quality as their dinner meals, and the quality of the cooking itself is above par: one paramount characteristic of Vedas is that for a small restaurant (or precisely because it is a small restaurant), it boasts a staff of cooks that is devoted to different aspects of the cooking process. As a result, the food is always fresh and on par with those rare restaurants that meet a unique and rare standard of excellence. (Small restaurants can benefit greatly from this: check out the documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" - it can illustrate the kind of culinary excellence you can only find at small restaurants that are this devoted to what they cook... Vedas is small, but packs incredible punch in their food)!
During our visits we have asked about the cooking, the staff, and their backgrounds. The owner comes from a hospitality background with a distinguished history of culinary work. He chooses his staff accordingly.
We recommend the Onion Bhajis, Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala (and I highly recommend asking JP about the history of Chicken Tikka Masala... ethnic cuisines can sometimes surprise you in their history; in fact, engaging JP on discussion about where certain dishes come from is part of the experience at Vedas), the Chicken 65, Coconut Pepper Shrimp (actually, all their Shrimp dishes, whether a starter or a main dish, are out of the ballpark good), and the Paneer Tikka.
We have tried other restaurants in the area, but the quality and the sense of eating a "clean meal", from the health perspective (for those that really watch what they eat), is always met at the highest standards at Vedas, which is why most of its customers seem to be regulars or people who have heard of it by...
Read moreVedas Indian Cuisine has a lot going for it—mainly the service, which is as warm and welcoming as a family gathering where no one judges you for eating the last samosa. The biryani is a definite highlight—flavorful and hearty, like it’s been made with some serious love. But, as a die-hard South Indian food enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. The South Indian dishes... well, they’re more “South Indian-inspired” than the real deal. It’s like someone Googled “South Indian food” and then decided to wing it. I long for those perfectly crispy dosas and sambars that hit you right in the soul. And let’s talk about beef. Yes, I said it. A true Malayalee establishment needs beef. It’s basically a food group, right?
In all honesty, the food is good, but it’s like a superhero with a lot of untapped potential. With a little more authenticity and a dash of magic (more beef and better South Indian dishes), this place could go from “good” to “I’m bringing the whole family next time.” Looking forward to seeing Vedas become the true king of Indian cuisine it’s...
Read moreMy wife and I have been visiting Veda for two or three years (since it opened, nearly): we have made it our go-to Indian restaurant in the area: the quality of the food (this is a tiny restaurant boasting a very professional cooking staff and a chef - a hidden gem of disciplined culinary effort), the prices, the superb customer service, and the environment are all factors.
Excellent for takeout and delivery, part of the charm of Veda is when you take the time to eat at the restaurant too: the staff makes you feel like you're at a five star restaurant and the camaraderie between regular customers, the staff, and new customers makes it a great respite. Veda's top notch dishes include its Corn and Asparagus Salad, Inion Bhaji, Mulligatawny Soup, Chicken 65, Coconut Pepper Shrimp, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Biryani, Chicken Vindaloo, Chicken Jalfrezi, Paneer Tikka, and Rasmalai.
If I could give Veda a higher recommendation I would: it's a hidden treasure in...
