I stopped by Nana and Pop Pop’s Sweet Shop at Oceanside Harbor because I was seriously needing ice cream. I saw several people with cones and bowls on the waterfront and found my way around to the south side of the building. The entrance is quaint and looks like something you’d see in Nantucket—very cute and charming. As soon as you walk in, you’re surrounded by taffy bins on both sides, sold by weight. In the center of the store, there are some T-shirts and other fun Oceanside memorabilia. Along the far section of the wall are the other sweet treats, like candy and such. But the thing I was most after was ice cream. It looked like they had a couple dozen flavors, though I didn’t count them. There are more than enough choices to keep me and my friend happy. It’s great to have so many options. My main goal was something chocolatey and tasty. I ended up getting chocolate malted crunch. I haven’t had that in forever. It was such a throwback, and I loved it. The clerk was super nice and answered all my questions about the different flavors. He was bright, young, and energetic. What more could you want at a fun little ice cream shop in a harbor location? This store, and the others in the area, kind of reminded me of Seaport Village in San Diego—fun and quirky with little treats and gifts. Can’t recommend it enough.

Nana and Pop’s Sweet Shop has been here forever. It’s a reason to come to Oceanside Harbor all unto itself. Like stepping back in time, the long forgotten treats of the ‘Good ol’ days’ are here aplenty. Blackjack gum, candy buttons, rock candy, and you didn’t hear it from me, but they used to sell candy/bubblegum cigarettes but you had to ask. Maybe not anymore, it has been a lot of years since I have. The smell of that candy shop could lull you into a nostalgic euphoria. The ice cream bar is my favorite. They make their own waffle cones and bowl, which is probably why it smells like heaven in there. They still carry my favorite flavor of ice cream, Bubblegum, and it’s hard to find that attractive brilliant blue with multicolored frozen gum balls sporadically protruding about. It reminds me of my childhood and it’s worth the drive just to get a little scoop of that simple heaven. If you haven’t been here, you should definitely try it. I feel like you’ve missed a HUGE part of what makes O’side harbor a place that you want to visit again and again and again. A definite local recommendation, can’t miss it!

This review was a long time in the making. Nana & Pop Pop’s is more than just a harbor-side candy store. Besides the sweets, the friendly staff and the novelty charm always had me coming back for more whenever I was in Oceanside CA. As someone with a sweet tooth, stepping into this candy store has me feeling like a kid in, well, a candy store. Although they sell plenty of candy, taffy, fudge, soda, and novelty items, the ice cream was the star of the show. For me, there are two treats they serve that are by far the best. One such item that I fell in love with was the chocolate-coated cheesecake. If you have ever wanted chocolate on your cheesecake with rainbow sprinkles, this is the guilty pleasure for you. A frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate topped with your choice of nuts or sprinkles. This has been my go-to desert from this place for a while, but on my most recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying their new choco taco. Handmade from scratch, the choco taco is an explosion of flavors that any ice cream lover will love. Starting with a homemade waffle cone shaped like a taco shell, they layer vanilla ice cream and hot fudge inside it. After sticking a Popsicle stick into it and leaving it to freeze overnight, they take it out and dip the entire thing into a vat of melted chocolate and coat it in your choice of sprinkles, nuts, or shredded coconut. The choco taco is a decadent treat that I wholeheartedly recommend. Since its opening in 1999, Nana and Pop Pop’s have left a lasting taste of sweetness in my mouth since my family discovered it. It has sweetened my vacations to Oceanside CA for as long as I can remember, and I hope it continues to do so for many...

We were finishing up our vacation yesterday in Oceanside and decided to stop here for ice cream. It's a very poor set up trying to have customers only come up to the counter when called. We were finally called up and put in our order for 2 double scoop cones and a kid cup for my daughter. The lady got our cones for us and handed them over. I took the cones and was standing holding the two cones not moving waiting for my husband to pay. I was not exerting any pressure on the cones at all just standing still holding them and both cones at the same time broke just a bit up from the base in the same place and the ice cream and top part of the cone landed on the ground. The workers did nothing to help clean it up or offer to remake our cones at cost or for a refund. I worked in a similar ice cream shop for 5 years as a teenager and know that the cones were pressed on too hard by the girl who scooped them fracturing the cone towards the bottom which then caused them to both break in the exact same spot and fall onto the floor. The fact that the workers said nothing, had us pay the $20 plus with tip though we literally had none of the ice cream, had us clean up the mess unassisted and offer no options for fixing the situation was the worst customer service I've experienced anywhere in a long time. So bad that I decided to leave them a review so they can try and fix their terrible customer service. For a store called nana and pop you would except great service and a caring attitude. We will never visit there again while visiting Oceanside which is a shame as we visit often as we got married...

My son and his church youth group and leaders (very large group) went here every week during June and July, easily spending over $200 a week. My son paid for his ice cream and never received his change back - which was over $15. I walked back with him to get his change, and the male employee told me that my son had “walked away”. Now if you’ve ever been here, you know how tiny this ice cream shop is so obviously not only was my son with a large group waiting for each other, but he could not have gotten too far for this employee not to have given him his change back. Both the male employee and the female employee were very rude and acted inconvenienced that they had to go in their TIP JAR to give my child his money back. Dishonest and unethical employees and business. Do not go here.

UPDATE TO OWNER CHRISTINA'S REPLY:

The fact that you are trying to claim that your customers leave up to $15 in change behind 90% percent of the time as a TIP for your employees is just plain pathetic. You are a dishonest person with absolutely zero integrity and clearly run your business the same way. Maybe you can take the thousands of dollars our church spent at your business and buy yourself some character and ethics. You might want to brush up on your basic math skills as well, as the end of July 2023 to August 2023 is NOT A MONTH LATER. Your propensity to...
