I haven't been to Roots in 2 years. I used to love it so much. Today, I am so disappointed. I came in about 1:45. I didn't realize the kitchen closed at 2:00. Google said the cafe was open until 3:00 so I figured I had plenty of time. There were a few people in front of me so by the time I got to the register it was close to 2:00. All the menus were up on the screens breakfast, lunch etc. I wanted the small plate hummus and feta with cucumber and pita. I was told I could not have lunch, only breakfast. I was able to order quiche but no African Peanut soup. I ordered 2 bakery items to go and a Cafe au Lait. I love Anodyne coffee and I got the Cafe Au Lait all the time 2 years ago because it was so fantastic! My quiche was heated so hot that I burned my mouth and the crust was burned on the bottom. My Cafe au Lait was basically water and milk. My broken Ninja coffee maker which brews only 2oz at a time makes a better coffee than what I received for $3.50. When my food was brought to my table I asked if there was some water I could have. I was seated at the very last table next to the doggy bakery window, I was told "Yeah we have water down at the other end of the bar". Now I don't expect to be waited-on in a cafe situation; however, a little courtesy and consientiousness would be nice. The young lady had just brought me my food, any customer-service minded individual would likely think "I just gave her her food, I should grab her the water so she doesn't have to leave her food sitting, unattended, at the table". The crew wasn't rude but they were definitely not friendly. I've worked on their side of the counter, it's not easy, foodservice is an exhausting and, more often than not, thankless job, I get it. The bottom-line is there is no business without the customers. We pay your salary and if we go elsewhere because of poor service and less than quality food, there is no job. There are plenty of other places to go in the area. Whether I am the first customer in the door or the last my experience should be up to the same standard I know this cafe is capable of. I'm not sure if today was just an off-day but I spent $18 and a half dollars on terrible food and drink and did not feel welcome and im still hungry. Please return to the root of Roots...welcoming atmosphere, yummy food and...

I really do love this place. When I first passed through Oconomowoc 3 years ago by happen chance, I stopped by Roots for lunch. The experience of seeing City Beach, eating lunch at Roots, and driving through downtown Oconomowoc was enough for me to pack up and move here 4 months later from an hour away.
I think they have the best coffee/Lattes in town.
Their food quality/service has always been top notch.
The interior is cozy and contemporary, Intimate and relaxing. This has been a repeat business I have spent $100s of dollars with in the last 3 years. I love it.
I just wanted to say that it is absolutely crazy that the breakfast burrito I ate today was 1/3 filled with corn. Not even fresh corn. FROZEN CORN! I’m still shocked. The texture and taste of frozen corn is beyond recognizable and barely palatable on a plate with butter let alone wrapped up and reheated in a breakfast burrito. Ya’ll need to remove the corn and replace with potato and even bell peppers (both can be frozen and reheated) - using frozen corn in a breakfast meal as an ingredient is crazy.
The other thing was I had a hard time reading the menu today with the baby blue background and fine font. I overheard the elderly couple behind me discussing the same thing.
I love Roots and will continue to patronize this business - but please guys tweak that burrito a...
Read moreFirst time here, came with friends on a Sunday for lunch. It’s located right across from Lake Fowler, so you can choose to dine inside or take your order to-go and sit at one of the lakeside tables. Inside, there are numerous seating areas for different-sized groups, spread across several “rooms” that give you a sense of privacy. Large front windows let in plenty of natural light, making the space feel open and bright.
We arrived right around noon, just as the lunch crowd was filling in. There was a short line that moved quickly. Service was friendly and helpful while we placed our order. We decided on the Brie Salad and the Avocado Toast, along with a Lemonade and a London Fog Tea Latte. I gave them my special instructions for the latte (a little lavender, a little vanilla, extra foam, in a mug), and they were happy to make it exactly as requested. Orders come with a number, and the staff delivers your food right to your table.
The wait was short before our food arrived, and the entire meal was excellent. My Avocado Toast was a treat — layered with toast, cream cheese (yes, cream cheese!), avocado, and feta on top. It was so good as is, but next time I’ll ask if they can add a poached egg on top — that would make it even more amazing.
A great first-time experience here. I’d definitely come back for breakfast (or maybe try...
