It's time I update this review. After having a pretty terrible experience the first time I tried to eat here, I swore it off. Well that lasted a whole 24 hours before I went back and gave them another try, I am more than happy I did.
Since my original issues stemmed from the online ordering system, I opted to go inside and order this time. They have the option to order using a kiosk or by speaking to one of their team members, I chose to use the kiosk, but it was nice to see the option. Ordering was quick and easy with a user-friendly menu, though it seems there were some things listed on the paper menu that were not on the kiosk, or on the online ordering system.
Shortly after placing my order, I realized I had forgotten to order chips, so I spoke to a team member to get them added on to my order. While we struggled a bit to figure out how to add them (it ultimately came down to placing a separate order), both the employee and manager who came over to assist were very friendly the entire time.
I stepped aside to wait for my order(s) and had a chance to admire just how amazing it looks inside! They really did a fantastic job of transforming the place. While it is a bit tight in there, they did a great job at maximizing the space, and the music is fun and fits the vibe of the place well (I did not find it too loud or distracting by any means). My food came up in about five minutes and I headed home to give it a try.
Everything we got was fantastic! We ordered chicken tacos, carne asada tacos, chips with queso and elote street corn. The tacos are, as I mentioned earlier, the closest you will get to authentic Mexican street tacos in NE Ohio. I'm not sure if the tortillas are made in house or not, but they really make the taco. The meat is seasoned well and there are plenty of toppings and lime wedges. The chips were warm and well seasoned. The queso was just okay. The street corn is well done and even had a nice presentation, especially considering this is a counter service restaurant. I've actually been back another time since and in addition to what I had already tried above I tried the guac and churro. Honestly, before this second trip I was going to give a 4, but the guac, and especially the churro, pushed it up to a 5 for me.
Overall, Wahaka is a fantastic addition to Howland among the slew of similar Mexican restaurants in the area. If you're looking for authentic street tacos/Mexican food, this is the place to come. If you're looking for oversized flour tortillas or hard tacos, you may want to try Taco Bell or something. I look forward to exploring the rest of their menu in the near future, and can't wait to sit out on the patio once the...
Read moreWhen ordering through the website you are able to view the menu without having to click on "order now" and enter all your information. This is a plus. Sometimes I just want to see what's on the menu. You shouldn't have to enter your email or anything else for that matter just to see if a restaurant has something you like.
Lots of great sounding options for plant based diets. And they offer vegan cheeses. They also offer gluten free options.
Special requests option for each item you order and a place to add notes at checkout. Nice when ordering online and when ordering for special diets. Lots of ways to customize your choices in ingredients too.
The Jackfruit Tacos are $13.00 for three. They come with cojita cheese. If you want to make them vegan, it is an extra $3.00. Vegan cheese is more expensive than regular cheese. But not that much more. The upcharge needs to be lowered. Especially given the fact that I couldn't really taste the cheese. And these tacos are small. They are three bites max. I ate one of them in two bites. Street tacos are supposed to be smaller than the tacos most of us are used. They shouldn't be so expensive given their size. The taste was good but I didn't notice anything all that different about them. The restaurant claims that their recipes are more authentic than any other area options. That may be the case but I couldn't tell an appreciable difference. Others in our group said the same, tasted good but nothing to write home about.
We ordered the food to be done at 5:15. It was done at 5:15, with a packed house waiting for food. No sooner, which was good. There was concern that the food would be sitting there waiting for us getting soggy. However, by the time we got home, (10 minute drive) the chimichanga someone in our group ordered was not crisp. Which is to be expected. You can't really do crisp with carryout. Unless you're eating in the parking lot.
Despite the order form asking for an email and a phone number, I never received a receipt for my online payment. There was concern we would have no way to prove we had paid and would not receive our food. That was not an issue. They had our order and never asked for a receipt. Take a screenshot if you order online. Just in case.
Summary- Despite the small portions, high prices, and less than crisp food, we will probably be back. Maybe in the summer when we can eat there. Bottom line is we love Mexican food and they have some great sounding...
Read moreWe went to try it finally now that the hype is over. We were super excited, especially after seeing all the reviews and we love street tacos! What a waste of money that was! We threw most of $75 worth of food in the garbage….
First, not sure if the girl working was new or not but she struggled a bit so I give her wiggle room to improve but when I asked her if the thinly sliced greens was lettuce or cabbage she said lettuce. Had I known it was cabbage I would have said to take it off. We did however say no onions or radishes on my husbands tacos and they still piled them on! There was also so much cabbage on both our tacos that after picking it all off, there went half our tacos. We both picked off the meat, pico, and cilantro and ate it with a fork and the rest went into the garbage.
The nachos were disappointing but that could also have been for all the cabbage all over it, majority went in the garbage. The verde salsa was good my husband said but the rest of the flavors… in the garbage.
The sour cream was different and tasty and so was the guacamole! But the chips has a weird seasoning that we ate a little bit of but majority was not ate.
The cilantro lime rice was good with flavor but dry. We added sour cream from home and ate it.
The chicken tortilla soup was AWFUL! It even looks terrible and smells even worse!
The corn was good! Had great flavor! Wish it was bigger for the price but it’s also out of season so that’s probably why! The churros was also absolutely delicious!
I hate to say this but overall, the corn, sour cream, guacamole, green verde, churros, cilantro rice and meat (chicken and steak) itself was the only good thing about our experience. The rest was very disappointing and man does my stomach not feel real great right now! Sorry Wahaka but I had higher hopes for your food, I hope the...
