Everything we had was "almost," but nah... I guess we'll start from the beginning. Complimentary chips and salsa were ok. Chips were really good, salsa was initially really good, but a stingy heat crept up. Not the good deep heat you get from chilis or jalapeños, but from cheap hot sauce. The salsa was pretty salty as well, so that may have been it. We also ordered the cheese queso appetizer. The queso was decent, but it was a little overpowered with black pepper. It was a little strong.
I ordered spinach enchiladas with rice and beans. The rice was slightly dry, but really good. The refried beans were really good with no issues. The spinach enchiladas themselves were good, but they were absolutely buried in an overly creamy tasting cheese sauce. I scraped most of it off just to find the enchiladas themselves.
My wife had beef enchiladas with a bowl of chicken tortilla soup. She said the beef enchiladas were good, but the chili con carne was "different." The only thing that was just not good at all was the chicken tortilla soup. I only tasted the broth and didn't want anymore. The broth tasted like either egg drop soup or concentrated canned chicken broth that hadn't had any seasoning or water added whatsoever. It wasn't "almost", it just wasn't at all.
Aside from the soup, everything just had something that held it back from being really good. Do we feel ripped off? No. Do we regret trying this restaurant? No. But, will we be back? Probably not. The people were nice, the service was good, the restaurant and bathrooms were clean, but it just...
Read moreWe used to love eating here. Staff was attentive, patio was beautiful with the fountains and comfy chairs and pretty tables, big palm fans and after the sun sets, there’s a perfect breeze for enjoying a margarita with friends. But tonight, the patio was closed and dirty, the food was flavorless, and when we ordered frozen margaritas, we were told that the machine was still freezing. So a Mexican restaurant on a Friday night was not prepared for people to order margaritas?? Then we went ahead and stayed, regrettably, because we had already ordered alternative drinks and the kids were eating set up. Fine. We ate our mediocre dinners and no one wanted to box up leftovers. It was pretty bad. The waitress offered sopapillas and then came out a few minutes later to say they didn’t have any—but asked if we’d like to buy some churros. Um, no. Check please. We tipped her because she did nothing wrong and felt bad for her. But the food? There’s a waste of $85. The building is so pretty outside and there used to be a gorgeous giant fountain out front that now is a disgusting algae- filled pond. I wish someone would buy the building and manage it better! I hate for that beautiful building to go to waste but the restaurant there now is clearly not managing it well....
Read moreCantina de los Milagros is descended from Pepe's (formerly in Edmond) and Laredo's (formerly on 63rd Street). Both of the former owners have passed on, but the menu reflects the menus found at those classic establishments which myself and I'm sure many people have been dining at since they were in diapers.
The aesthetic of the restaurant can only be described as you can tell they spent top dollar on the building as the architecture is beautiful and unique. The inside is clean, and beautifully appointed. Except that it appears they ran out of money to finish the exterior as parts of a would-be fountain have been sitting in front of the building for years now and the management appears to have decided to stop maintaining the fish tank, which is a huge salt water tank which once contained some beautiful fish. Now it is a disgusting, algae-riddled mess. This is a real puzzler because the rest of the place is immaculate and beautiful.
The food is your basic, unpretentious Tex Mex fare offered at extremely reasonable prices. Chips with salsa AND queso are complimentary as is relish and other salsas if requested. There is a secret menu of salsas which are complimentary if you inquire about them. I recommend Milagros sauce if you enjoy...
