Cava Mezze Olney, nestled in downtown Olney, Maryland, is truly a hidden gem. Despite being in operation for nearly 8 years, this restaurant somehow managed to elude our radar until today.
The name "Cava" derives from the Greek term for 'high-end' table wine or wine cellar, while "Mezze," also known as "Meze," signifies a taste or a bite. Meze-style cuisine, akin to Spanish tapas, offers an array of small plates served alongside beverages or as appetizersāa culinary tradition prevalent in Greece and Turkey. With a moniker like that, one can expect a high-end establishment specializing in Mediterranean Mezze dishes.
While some patrons opted for rather formal attire, the majority appeared to be locals from the neighborhood, contributing to an overall casual and welcoming ambiance. The presence of a sizable bar bench within the restaurant added to the lively atmosphere, with patrons reveling in spirited conversation and laughter, creating a festive, party-like atmosphere.
Opting to sit outdoors beneath an umbrella, we relished in unhurried conversation amidst the gentle fall breezes. To kick things off, I ordered a meticulously crafted Passion Fruit Margarita, comprising silver tequila, passion fruit, lavender, and agave. It arrived adorned with elegant garnishes in a unique and stylish glass.
To experience a comprehensive sampling of Greek flavors, we heeded the waiter's suggestion and selected the "Chef D Platter." This traditional Mediterranean meze platter presented a tantalizing assortment of Greek delights beautifully arranged on a generously sized serving platter. Our feast included two succulent lamb chops, 2 delectable chicken souvlaki skewers, 4 savory grilled meatballs, gyro meat, pork belly, a side of fries, along with pita, onions, and tomatoes. The crowning touch was the Tzatziki dipping sauce, featuring Greek yogurt, cucumber, mint, dill, garlic, and pickled beets. Suffice it to say, it was an ample spread, as humorously indicated on the menu: "serves 2-3 people or 1 animal, LOL." Nevertheless, I relished every bite.
Notably, the restaurant's owner, Gus, is a remarkably friendly individual. He personally approached our table, introduced himself, and engaged us in pleasant conversation. Gus's warm and familiar greetings to other patrons, akin to a local villager, added a heartwarming touch to the dining experience.
In sum, our dinner at Cava Mezze Olney was a delightful affair that we wholeheartedly endorse. With a bill of slightly over $50 per person, it represents excellent value for a memorable Mediterranean...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOne of my dream destinations is Greece and yesterday I had a taste of it (not just literally from the heavenly food but most important to me the hospitality and warmth of the Mediterranean people). On a dreary day when I was feeling sick and down because of the cold, I went with a friend to have some bites. We were drawn in by the happy hour sign outside. I was surprised to find out they had an Olney location which is a sit-down trendy industrial chic place. I was surprised to further find out it has been 10 years since Cava Mezze first started and they have grown explosively. I was with a friend who is not as adventurous as I am so we asked for advice as to spice levels. We ended ordering the lamb slider, roasted eggplant dip with pita and cucumbers to dip, scallops with risotto, saganaki (flaming cheese) and French toast for dessert. The scallops were the best I have had ever ā so tender and flavorful, I could eat just that. The olive oil and harissa that comes with the pita was a great pairing. The lamb for the slider was delectable and high quality which I later learned from Gus, brother to one of the founders who stopped by our table to welcome us, comes from lamb chops. Gus further informed us that the food is local when possible and fresh (which is evident from how flavorful everything is without heavy dressings or oils). Gus also schooled us on the difference between Halloumi and Saganaki. Halloumi is from Cyprus. The Saganaki was complex flavors (a little melted, sweet & bitter ā symphony for your tastebuds). I loved how it was lit at our tableside and then extinguished with lemon juice. I had a glass of white Greek wine which was crisp and refreshing. The French toast looked so decadent like the gold room at Versaille ā powereder sugar on top of a fluffy toast (which was slightly crispy on the outside) laden with sweet blueberries and raspberries. However, my fave part was the homemade crĆØme that was whipped and looked like ice cream on top. I will definitely be back for the bottomless mimosa brunch and never-ending tapas. This is a fantastic place for couples, friends, happy hour and lounging.
This has been my favorite meal of 2017 and 2016. Besides the high quality of the food, I loved learning about the food from Gus and his love for providing an unforgettable experience as if you had been in his actual home (where he sleeps) is what stays with me. Mykonos, until we can be together, I will go to Cava Mezze Olney when I need a little Greek...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant which I've passed by all the time; The wait staff was attentive, The menu required some explanation, but for a small plate restaurant we got a lot of food for our money. The fare was Mediterranean with hummus pita bread falafel mini gyros and more. They had an extensive wine list at decent prices and The staff was refilling water and asking how was everything to show that they cared about how you felt about the food and its presentation. Of course we were there for an early dinner so the restaurant was not crowded but still I was impressed with the caliber of the service. The food presentation was exceptional and each plate was well arranged and had an ample amount of food for small plates. The weight staff knew the menu very well and made recommendations based on what they liked how spicy it was etc. The service was timely and there was no exceptional wait for any of the items and they were cooked fresh. There's ample parking in the parking lot including handicap spots, and the restaurant is right off of main road next to a Starbucks and a CVS. Cava Mezze has several locations and I was told this was one of the largest with ample seating at a full-service bar. The restaurant itself was clean including the bathrooms and tables. I highly recommend this restaurant as an alternative to the conventional and some place where you can relax and unwind for an evening with an interesting meal a good bottle of wine and hopefully inspired conversation with your companions well...
