Slow service, overpriced, poorly cooked, small portions of frozen grocery store quality food.
Seems like the owner/cook decided to throw the towel in because the place looks poorly maintained (which we initially thought would add to its rustic style charm but it did not) it turns out that the quality of the food ingredients that were served to us was comparable to frozen no-name brand ingredients. If you want "great value" ingredients, poorly cooked with Texas roadhouse or Applebee's prices, then this is the place to go.
Service was slow due to a loud party that was there, didn't say anything cause it was clearly a special occasion for them and we didn't want to ruin it despite it being nearly 2h for us to get in and out. When we finally got the food it was missing parts of the order, no seafood sauce, no syrup for pancakes, no tartar sauce etc. Husband had the full breakfast, eggs were rubbery, sausage was poor, hashbrowns were ok. We split the seafood sampler (fried shrimp, fish and chips with onion rings instead of fish). Paid a lot of money for 2 small extremely oily grocery store frozen fish sticks (it was literally pooled under it), fried shrimp was ok but there was only a very small portion along with 5 half decent onion rings. I had the ribs with broccoli and roasted potatos as a side. They were horrible cuts, barely any meat to begin with, nevermind that half of the ribs were cartledge and severly overcooked. The sauce was the saving grace but they were so skimpy with it that it didn't even cover the tops of the ribs, nevermind the sides or bottom. They aren't rubbed or anything so you're just eating flavourless unseasoned pork at that point with the occasional bit of sauce rationed out to make it palettable. The broccoli and roasted potatoes did not seem to have any seasoning, very bland and unmemorable.
We paid 70+ dollars to eat here... for poorly cooked, small portion, grocery store frozen ingredients with slow service we could have gone pretty much anywhere else and had a...
Read moreThis was the first time I’ve eaten out locally since the pandemic, and probably the last time. Food was okay, but a “pretty well done” breakfast steak turned out to be charcoal crusted on both sides. It tasted okay, but it’s widely known these days that burnt meat is carcinogenic. Service was okay. The meal I ordered was priced at slightly under $17 on the menu, but I was charged over $8 more than that. I should have protested, but having just gotten off night shift I was too tired and had laryngitis and I was not feeling well, and didn’t feel up to a confrontation over just $8. I even gave the waitress a 20% tip. But I thought I should warn future potential customers of this restaurant’s practice of charging more than stated on their menu. It’s not the only restaurant that does this. I’ve had it tried on me in the past and I stood my ground and got my bill reduced to the stated price. I’ll never eat at a Country Kitchen again because of this, though. Probably be forever before I eat out again because of this negative experience, unless I’m on the road and don’t have a choice. I work front desk at a nearby hotel and I will never recommend Country Kitchen again to one of our guests. No need for CK to politely respond and try to convince me that an employee made an inadvertent mistake and I should “give them another chance to meet my expectations.” You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. They should make basic integrity and quality (non-carcinogenic) food...
Read moreI'm staying at the Clarion Inn and have eaten here for breakfast and dinner several times. Each time I order something different, in hopes that one of their dishes won't disappoint. Alas, they have all been a let down, so here we are.
I don't think anything is made with fresh ingredients. The scrambled eggs and omelettes taste like powdered eggs, and their hash browns are undercooked. I ordered a salad with chicken breast and it was noticeably undercooked. This time I tried the steak medallions. They were not steak medallions, or at least not like I've had at other establishments, but rather cheap cuts of beef, and severely over cooked, despite requesting the steak cooked medium rare. The vegetable blend had the look and taste of frozen vegetables and the mashed potatoes looked and tasted like instant mashed potatoes. For a restaurant, in the heart of potato country, they were a huge let down. None of the food is seasoned when cooked and is bland and lifeless.
I can only assume that the only decent items on the menu must be breaded and deep fried. Although after looking at other reviews, this is doubtful as well.
Despite the shortcomings from the kitchen, the restaurant is clean and the wait staff is very kind and friendly.
To be fair, their food is on par with everything else I have had in this town. So if you are in Ontario, OR, this is pretty standard, from my...
