We chose Luna's for our last dinner out before concluding our beach weekend getaway. We were so happy we did!
This restaurant is located alongside a few other restaurants and shops and hosts a large gravel parking lot and a pretty turf lawn that I think has some games available to play. It was bigger inside than I expected and we didn't have any trouble getting a seat for party of 9 on a Saturday evening.
Our waitress was Claudette, if I remember correctly. She worked very hard to keep all our drinks topped off and our food orders and specifications correct. She had a calm and pleasant disposition and I enjoyed chatting with her.
We ordered a little bit of everything. To start, we had the pretzels and beer cheese - yummy! The cheese especially was delicious. I decided I'd be a little extra and order a drink; Claudette steered me towards Luna's Tropical Splash, which had mint, strawberries, and a coconut rum base. It was delicious and refreshing! Note that there are a few small pieces of mint and strawberry so if you like a texturally very smooth drink this won't be for you; I really enjoyed it!
Love the blend of coastal and southern food here. It was a great pick for us because several of our party just aren't that into seafood, myself included. I can't remember exactly what everyone ordered, but I'll do my best. I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and greens; sister-in-law and her husband got the same thing but swapped for different sides (fries and corn on the cob, I think). Other SIL got a burger and fries. Husband got the crab claws. My mother-in-law got a shrimp poboy and father-in-law got the wings and a salad. Baby cousin got fried shrimp and her friend got a salad and a side of hush puppies. Whew! Think that covers it all.
Absolutely NO ONE had anything they were disappointed with. Well, okay, my husband misread the menu and thought he was ordering crab legs and not claws and that bummed him out; but that was his mistake lol. Sis-in-law loved her burger and said she'd eat it everyday. Baby cuz said she couldn't believe how good every restaurant I'd picked out for us had been, especially this one. FIL loved the wings. And me? Man, my food was good. I am also usually someone who'd swap for different sides as opposed to mashed potatoes and greens, but hearing the reviews about this place, I took a chance and figured the chef probably knows what they're doing. They do. The combination of flavors was spot-on. Salty, crispy, succulent chicken; smooth and creamy potatoes; the brightness of the collards and the savory pot liquor...WHEW. SIL and her husband agreed the fried chicken was amazing.
Also, for the record, baby cuz's friend couldn't eat all her hush puppies so I tried one. Didn't get a ton of pimento flavor BUT that homemade blueberry pepper jelly was fabulous.
I don't come to "the beach" that often but Luna's will be high on my list of places to return when inevitably I wind up on the gulf again! Great service and...
Read moreMarinated Gulf Shrimp Salad is shrimp served low country style with lemon and spices over crisp greens and topped with fried onions. The gulf shrimp had a meaty texture like lobster and had such a great flavor. The shrimp we normally get on the west coast pales in comparison. The lemon and spices added a nice zing and paired well with the salad greens. The fried onions were like “croutons” and added a crispy texture to the dish. Rating: 4.5/5
Crab Claws are fresh Gulf blue crab claws lightly floured and fried. If you love crab, you’ll love these. The lightly fried exterior contrasted nicely with the sweet crab meat inside. They are very easy to eat, just like eating artichoke leaves. This would be a great appetizer to share with friends while watching a game and some pints of ice cold beer. Rating: 5/5
BBQ Gulf Oysters are lightly breaded and fried Gulf oysters served over Creole BBQ cream sauce and topped with crisp bacon and chives. The breading on the outside was like a perfectly fried chicken or chicken fried steak, bumpy, crispy coating with amazing flavor. The oyster itself was juicy and cooked just right where there was still a bit of briny oyster liqueur inside. The creole BBQ cream sauce added a creamy yet spicy kick to the dish. I could eat this forever! Rating: 5/5
Cola Braised Pork Belly is served over house-made cornbread and topped with white BBQ sauce and red cabbage slaw. The cola helped tenderize the pork and caramelized on the outside for a nice bark. White BBQ sauce was introduced in Decatur, AL by Big Bob Gibson back in 1925. As this was my first time having it, I have to say it was a little different but gave the pork belly a nice tangy flavor. The slaw on top added a crunchy texture. Rating: 4.5/5
The Beerger is a beer-basted burger on a sweet sourdough bun with Luna’s beer mustard, fried onions, and Luna’s beer cheese. The perfect gastropub burger! The burger patty itself is huge! The mustard added a tangy flavor. The beer cheese was luscious with cheesy and hoppy flavor from the beer. All you need is an ice-cold beer to pair with it!...
Read moreDeceptive happy hour pricing and uninformed staff. Went to Luna’s for happy hour, noticed the $3.50 well liquor price printed on the menu. Asked the server if we could order a martini at the happy hour price, was told we could. One of our party asked about a bourbon drink, the server said they didn’t have a house bourbon only vodka, gin and tequila. When we received our bill the martini’s were $8.50, not $3.50, the server said that the gin in the martini was $3.50 and the rest of the drink was $5.00 additional. After a discussion the server had the “manager” come to our table. The manager stated that a martini was as twice the liquor, hence the $5.00 up charge. Not trying to be a math genius but I pointed out that twice the price of $3.50 is $7.00 not $8.50, the “manager” could not explain the difference. We pointed out, with 6 customers agreeing, that the server DID not mention a $5.00 up charge for ordering a martini. The manager left, upon returning said she spoke with her GM and would split the difference with us. Her idea of splitting the difference was she reduce the price of one martini to $3.50 and charged us $8.50 for all the others. Again not trying to be a math genius here, but that’s not splitting the difference. Not to mention it was the servers mistake all along that we ended up paying for. In the end we over paid for what we ordered and the “manager” was less than lackluster in her job. Then we asked about why they didn’t have a house bourbon, she said the server was right the only have bourbon whiskey….maybe it was their first day on the job. I won’t go back and will take my party of six, with our quite large tab else where. These people never heard of the customer is always right, even with 6 customers saying the server said we could order the martini at the $3.50...
